[Verizon] Should I root from Ubuntu or Windows?

Joey1558

Newbie
I have done a little searching and haven't really found any comparisons of the two. Could anyone tell me which OS would be ideal to root my phone from. I have read that Windows can have some trouble with the drivers, so would it be a good idea to just go ahead and do all my rooting from Ubuntu if I already have it or would this present other issues.

Thanks

IMO it really doesnt matter, rooting this phone is so easy. just follow these directions:

ClockworkMod Method (courtesy of Koushik Dutta)

Pros:

-- simplest and fastest from what I've found
-- works for both GSM and LTE versions of the device
-- does not require a special (insecured) boot.img file

Cons: requires both adb and fastboot USB connectivity

Brief description:

- download su.zip flashable root package and proper version of ClockworkMod
- put phone in fastboot mode
- soft-boot or flash ClockworkMod custom recovery
- push the su.zip file to your phone via adb
- flash the su.zip root package in ClockworkMod to install root
- reboot phone

i have pda net installed on my windows 7 PC,and i didnt even need to mess with drivers. i plugged in the phone,it installed drivers, and it was recognized by adb. booted it to fastboot and it was recognized there as well. yay! :D

if youre intimidated to set up ADB/fastboot on a PC,you can use this file:
Multiupload.com - upload your files to multiple file hosting sites!
md5: 9d1c0e2a98f09bb65521889870334b65

all you need to do is unzip the file, and placed the unzipped folder on the root of C on your PC. open a command window by clicking the start bubble, and type "command" into the search bar. change to that folder by entering the command cd c:\mini-adb volia! youre ready root. :)

if you allready have the sdk set up on windows or linux,as i said above, its really 6 of one, half dozen of the other wich one you use. the computer is really not that big a part of it. im not sure wich one may be easier as far as drivers.

if you have the choice and your proficient in Linux i would use it just to be able to skip everything where you see the word driver lol

I did it on my MBP and i was glad i didn't have to screw with the drivers. The driver situation is a little more clear now though. On day one it was mass confusion.

I unlocked and rooted using Wugfresh's one-click program on Windows XP. The drivers installed without issue on the first try. Actually, everything worked on the first try :D

Thank you all. When I plugged my Nexus into my computer to charge, it was recognized and already downloaded a driver (successfully I'll add) because once it was finished it recognized it was a "Galaxy Nexus". However I didn't think this was the right type of driver. I was under the impression I still needed to install some other type of driver.

There are several different drivers for this phone: MTP, PTP, & ADB (plus a few others depending on the state of your phone, I think --- it is recognized as something different if it is off, and something else in ODIN mode, and something else in fastboot mode, etc... at least windows recognizes it as all sorts of different things). I had trouble getting the drivers to work on windows xp until I plugged in the device and then launched windows update... windows update then saw that I needed a hardware update, and that fixed my driver issue.

I couldn't get it to work on my Ubuntu side (10.04). I can browse the phone in PTP mode, and use usb tethering, but can't get MTP to work.

So I just rooted using windows, I think following clockworkmod method. It was fairly straightforward, and no issues.

I used windows 7 to root but had the option of using Ubuntu. I chose W7 because I am more used the the enviorment. IMO it comes down to which one are you are more comfortable with the outcome should be the same.

As for the windows drivers you will likely need to download the drivers that are known to work. I don't think the ones windows finds are the correct ones to unlock and root ;)

theres one way to find out :D

open your command window, and see if adb decvices gives you a serial number back. if not, then youll need more drivers.

if you do get a serial number, then adb reboot bootloader and when you get there, enter fastboot devices and see if you get a serial number here, too. if so youre ready to root :)

If you haven't already you need to do the SDK portion of the root process before starting this ;)

I had fun learning the "easy" process of unlocking and rooting with Ubuntu. If you need help drop a PM.
