Wildfire S how do i update to Gingerbread 2.3.5?

Okay i've trawled through the internet and threads here and can't work out how to update my software to Gingerbread 2.3.5?

I have tried to update via 'Software Updates' and it say i have the most up to date software,.

I have an unlocked Telstra Wildfire S

I'm a noob and dont really understand rooting so i'd prefer not to go there until i get a bit more knowledge under my belt.

I got my APN sorted out today and my 3G Vodfone prepaid data only connected so i'm over that hurdle and keen for more...........Gingerbread 2.3.5 update is next followed by the tweak to send all apps to SD.

Still no update for me...........i've checked the software update again today and nothing.

I'm in Australia, Queensland.

Are there any settings in the phone that might be effecting this?

If not i'll give it a few more weeks for the update notification to come through.

Yes, it's possible if the phone is not locked. But it will involve de-branding your phone and changing it's model to A510e. User Realaaa was able to go onto rooting his phone as well. Read about his experiences here.

Unless your phone is rooted, it will not be possible

Actually, installing a stock HTC ROM never requires root if the ROM is right for the phone.

I'm not too fused about losing my warranty and debranding is ok as well.

My phone is Telstra and i also have Crazy John pop on the screen.

I got this phone as my introduction to Android and it was cheap so happy to play around with it (within my nooby limits of course) i dont want a brick.

I've read a little about the rooting and i guess my initial concern is that i understand the A510B (which i have) has both 3G and Next G while the A510E is only 3G and if i root my phone it will revert back to a A510E.

When i bought the phone i got the 850MHz/2100MHz model because i was told that because i am using a Vodafone Prepaid SIM this would offer me the best speeds on their new 850MHz network. Whether this is true or not i have no idea but if there is any advantage to the 850MHz network and if i would lose that by reverting back to a A510E then i probably would not want to do that because i'll probably stick with Vodafone in the future.

However, given i dont really understand the pro's and con's of 850MHz/2100MHz vs 900MHz/2100MHz and how this would impact my Vodafone Prepaid mobile broadband i wondered if one of you might be able to advise what is best?

I am on the Gold Coast in Australia.

Once i understand this better i can decide if rooting is worth a crack?

In that case I wouldn't worry too much about updating the ROM before rooting. You can probably flash the European bootloader update from htcdev.com (if they don't have one for your carrier) since the phone is the same as the A510e except for the radio. What you need to avoid is flashing the radio which won't happen in the bootloader update process.

htcdev.com advises the following

BEFORE beginning the Unlock Bootloader process your product requires that you update the ROM to the version listed in the table below first, then download the RUU next to it to enable the unlocking capability.

My model is Telstra

So the ROM version they list is 'Telstra WWE 1.52.841.1'

My phone lists its software number as 1.52.841.2

Do these need to match or am i good to go because i have a newer version?

Go ahead and try all the steps in section 3 regardless of version number. The main thing is compatibility with your phone.

Got an error (130): MODEL ID ERROR

Says this ROM Update can not update your Android device please get the appropriate ROM update utility and try again.

I've double checked the Model number behind the battery and its PG76120. I am 100% certain its Telsta because thats what comes up on the screen when its boots up.

What is the correct default connection type? Is it Disk Drive?

Thanks, i am making progress.

I now have *** LOCKED *** showing in my bootloader.

I had to use the method below, but my HBOOT version now says 1.09.009

1) Run the RUU again and look for the temp folder it created, I something like C:\​Users\​[YourLoginNameHere]\​AppData\​Local\​Temp​\​{82B23FCD-D5D0-45CA-A3A2-5350D3926551}
2) Find rom_02.zip in a subfolder of that folder and rename it PG76IMG.zip
3) Copy PG76IMG.zip onto the root directory of your MicroSDHC card
4) Shutdown the phone, pull and reinsert the battery and reinstall the MicroSDHC card
5) Boot into bootloader (hold volume down and press power)
6) Wait for it to load PG76IMG.zip and press volume up ("yes") to install
7) Shut the phone down and delete PG76IMG.zip from the MicroSDHC card
8) Boot into bootloader again and you should see ***_LOCKED_(OOW)_*** with a bootloader version of H-BOOT-1.08.0099 or H-BOOT-1.10.0000 below.

Now moving into 3C, this could test my nooby skills..........i'll come back if i get stuck.

Okie doke, successfully rooted using this method

1) Press 1 followed by enter (Prep using zergRush).
2) Press 3 followed by enter (Attempt Perm Root). It will tell you if the phone was successfully rooted.
3) Type "reboot" followed by enter to reboot the phone

Congrats! Like I said before, all you need to worry about is NOT flashing your radio which would happen by flashing a stock HTC ROM for an A510e. If you flash a custom ROM for the A510e, it shouldn't touch the radio as ROM developers are not interested in that part of the system.

Guys i'm a bit lost now and need some help, i have downloaded the recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.8-marvel zip file but when i try and open it i get told that winzip only supports IMG files that are in the ISO format.

What program do i need to use to extract the recovery image?

Also, once i get this working and i have backed up my stock HTC ROM and then install a custom ROM will i be updated to 2.3.5?

Sorry if this is a dumb question but i'm trying to understand how i upgrade to the 2.3.5 now i am rooted. No idea what i am doing but i can follow instructions.....

Winzip or 7zip should be able to extract the img file from the zip file you downloaded. You do not need to open the img file or read its contents - just to flash it.

To answer your 2nd question, most custom ROMs are based on 2.3.5 or 2.3.7 (CyanogenMod). But if you restore your stock ROM the device will be back to 2.3.3.

I'm still stuck, trying to work out how to flash this recovery image is testing me.

I finally have the IMG file. The first two downloads i did must have had issues or been corrupted because i could not extract the IMG file, finally after downloading it from 4shared i got one that i could extract it from the zip file. A very long afternoon.............

I need step by step instructions on how to do the fastboot flash recovery [image name.img] - i dont understand this??

Where do i put the IMG file is this on the PC or SD card?

I just modified the guide to include clearer instructions since this has come up twice in the last couple days:

5A. Install ClockworkMod Recovery for WFS
1. Download the official 5.0.2.8 image at http://download.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/. Make sure you choose the right one for your device whether Marvel or MarvelC. Extract the img file from the zip you just downloaded and save it somewhere you can find it later.

2. Boot the phone into HBOOT. (You are a pro at this by now, right? ) After it scans for PG7610.zip, select FASTBOOT and press the power button then connect the USB cable. The word FASTBOOT will change into FASTBOOT USB. If not, then either your USB drivers for the Wildfire S or Android SDK Tools is not installed properly.

3. Open a command prompt in Windows and navigate to the folder where you extracted the recovery image in step 1.

4. Type the following command: fastboot flash recovery [image name.img]. For example:
D:\> fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.8-marvel.img

If you have downloaded the MarvelC image, the image name will be slightly different.

5. After flashing the new recovery, reboot the phone and head over to Google Play [formerly Android Market] to pick up the ClockworkMod ROM Manager app.

I can get through to step 4. Type the following command: fastboot flash recovery [image name.img]. For example:
D:\> fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.8-marvel.img

When i type that in and hit enter it tells me that 'fastboot' is not recognised as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

I've got the correct IMG file which is marvel not marvelC.

However, all that said............i have flashed a clockworkmod recovery using this method, is this all i need to do and does this now allow me to go and load a custom ROM?

If it's telling you that fastboot isn't recognized, then Android SDK tools is not properly installed. But if you are seeing 5.0.2.8 with a black top hat and blue letters, then you are looking at the custom recovery you just flashed using the other method.

Generally, I don't care for the method found in the video. I know of a couple people who have bricked their phones flashing this way because they deleted their stock recovery and the flash operation of the custom recovery failed. The FASTBOOT method in my guide removes some variables and is safer, if you ask me. But it's definitely not simpler.

And yes, you can flash custom ROMs through ROM manager, but most custom ROMs aren't available through ROM Manager. See the list linked in 5C of my guide for tons of working ROMs for your phone. But first...

To backup your present stock ROM, boot into HBOOT, choose RECOVERY and you'll see the option for Backup and restore. It will write what's called a nandroid backup on your SD card.

The installation for custom ROMs is found in the original forum post for the ROM itself. For example, if you go to EQDKP Sense 3.5 by m1ndh4x8r, in the first post you will find instructions by m1ndh4x8r for flashing his ROM. But the general procedure is found in my guide at step 5C. Just make sure that the ROM you want to flash is for your phone (Marvel and not a MarvelC).

If you have a problem or softbrick the phone (it won't boot) you can go back into HBOOT/Recovery and restore the stock ROM from the backup you did.

Yep, thats exactly what i got. Another box ticked.

It says ClockworkMod Recovery v5.0.2.8 at the top and then the blue text below.

I went into Recovery and did as you said and selected the option for backup and restore. It has proceeded to do the nandroid backup on the SD card.

Not bad for a noob...........pretty happy with todays effort!

Next i am going to try and load EQDKP Sense 3.5 by m1ndh4x8r, if its good enough for you then its probably 100X what i need.

Is it the Deodexed ROM that i download or the Odex ROM?
