Is there a version of 4.0.4 that can be flashed that will allow future OTA updated from VZW?

Hey all,

I am pretty close to installing the 4.0.4 OS that was recently pushed by Google recently. However, i have been reading conflicting results on this part... is there a version of that that would allow an update to the "official" update when it's released by Google - or any future updates for that matter?

I guess the reason i ask is because those handsets that were officially update from Google (whether still a test or not) will still have to be updates when the next official release is pushed to everyone - so i figure it must be possible to install the 'leak' from earlier this week and then still receive the updates. Even if it means re-locking and unrooting - that's fine with me..

Well, if this 4.0.4 becomes official then it will allow future updates to install as long as you don't overwrite the stock recovery or change anything in the rom. If verizon pulls this update for some reason I am guessing they would have test users somehow roll back to 4.0.2. In which case you'd have to roll back to 4.0.2 as well to get future updates.

That seems like a nightmare for the poor people who were part of the 'test' group - that is, unless the rollback and update is all rolled into one process and no data is lost - then the end users will never know.


I think i'll try this update since it's for non rooted, and non unlocked phones. Does it appear that this is "plain" enough that there's no ROM alteration that would prohibit future updates (not even sure if you can get that info from the instruction). Here's the link:

I suppose, once a newer version is released OTA, we can just repeat the same steps above, just using the new file everytime - correct?

not sure anyone can really answer your question until we see what verizon decides to push. if you do the upgrade now, worst case is that you will have to roll back to 4.0.2 (which wipes data) to get back on the OTA upgrade path. it's really not as painful as it sounds (at least not when compared with trying to do this on a Moto device ).

Many of us have yo-yo'd back and forth between versions on other devices and even here. I restored my 4.02 backup to flash the leaked OTA last week (I was bored. ), then restored my 4.04 rom backup. It's no big deal. You can just root and backup your stock rom or flash back to stock if you REALLY need that OTA. Once you're on a custom rom, stock ota's are nbd, b/c we have bootloaders and radios available w/in hours of a release or leak.
