Root If already rooted, does HBoot version matter?

I've tried looking around for this as I have an extremely early hboot (0.9x...). I want to make sure that that won't be a problem when installing a custom rom or even flashing Amon RA.

And a quick bonus question...do I need to update or do anything with kernels if I plan on installing cyanogenmod? I've been reading and reading...and seems every tutorial/guide author says something slightly different and makes me wonder what the best route is for continuing.

your hboot is fine no need to change it.

all roms comes with kernels. so there really is no need to mess with them if you do not want to. but you can always flash custom kernels later as well. just keep in mind that kernels are specific to the type of rom you flash, cm7 or cm9 and now cm10 are all aosp roms so you will need to flash an aosp kernel.

so here is a list of roms and kernels:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/618281-list-utilities-apps-roms-kernels-og-evo.html
in the second post i go into more details about roms and kernels. please read it.

and here is some more reading for you:

just skip the rooting part and go to the after root section for more info as well

hope that helps:)

Thank you. I've actually read both but between those and other threads on this site and a few other sites, questions just started piling up.

A lil off topic but I'm trying to flash Amon and when I mount as drive on the phone when connected to the computer (or even if I remove the sdcard and put it in the computer), I get this:
33f27d.png

And when I use Astro or any other root explorer and go to the SDCARD, it says empty so I can't technically access the .img file from the phone because it "doesn't exist" it seems... I've seen other people have had this same issue but every post I've found has 1 reply asking the OP a question and the OP never comes back to answer. I was wondering if you've come across this issue and know a fix for it. Thanks.

Did you try to reboot the phone and then use Astro to access sd card?
From the looks of your post, the "Astro" file was written to the sd card on 10-7-12...indicating the phone is writing to the sd card.
When you disconnect the phone from computer, do you unmount it first?
Try this on the phone, unmount the sd card, then remount it....or if the "remount" option is not there, power down phone, wait a minute, then power back up...phone should auto mount sd card.
You said this happens with other file browsers as well?

Edit: can you view pictures on your phone from the Gallery? Reason I ask is, photos are stored in the DCIM folder on your sd card...if you can view photos, the sd card is being accessed.

I can unmount and remount. It does nothing. Like I said, that's how the SD card looks whether it is in my phone and I'm using it as a hdd mount or if I take the SD card out and put it directly into my PC. My confusion is...if there is all these files on my SD card, why can't I see them when I access my SD card through Astro?

you do not need the .img to get amon ra going with your hboot.

just go to the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html. it has instructions on how to get amon ra installed onto your computer.

I know I don't have to, it was just I can't seem to find the most recent one in a zip. And it seemed easy enough to do it with an img using:
FLASH AMON RA RECOVERY IMAGE - YouTube

I have tried putting in /sdcard/ as well as /mnt/sdcard/ and both tell me that the image file isn't located there.

You said you probably tried this, but what about other file browsers such as Root Explorer?
Can you view pictures? the reason I ask is, pix are on sd card. If you can view them, then the phone can "see" the sd card but the question here is, why cannot Astro see the sd card contents correct?

ok i hate you tube videos to be honest. but i get it.

one curiosity, what size sd card are you using?

so in order to flash amon ra via the .img file you need to have adb and fastboot set up so go here:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...-rooting-gingerbread-2-3-5-dummies-guide.html and go to the htc method/step 2 getting recovery/adb method. it has instructions there. basically you will need to fastboot command the recovery.img to the phone.

Through the gallery I can view pictures but not through root explorer or astro bc I can't find them. And yes, I've tried both root explorer and astro.

Thank you. I'll take a look at that once I figure out what is going on with my sd card.

I'm thinking maybe I need to reformat it and wipe the data on it...I think I may have read someone's reply to someone who had a similar problem saying that it might work but the OP never responded saying if it did or not. :/

Thanks for both of your guys' help. I appreciate you taking the time and linking me to things and being patient with me.

I just wanted to give an update on this situation on not seeing the SD card through astro or root explorer. It seemed I was on such an old OS that the program somehow wasn't allowed to see the contents of the SD card. Once I installed a custom rom, it appears the issue fixed itself and I can now see the contents of the SD card through both astro and root explorer.

So for anyone that has this type of issue, you can put the custom rom on the sd card and the recovery will still be able to see it and once it is installed, you'll be able to see the contents. I didn't format the SD card through the recovery process, nor did I wipe it prior to the recovery process like I had mentioned I might do in the above post. Just clarifying.

Thanks for the update, it helps out others if they are in the same situation you were. :D
