Getting Nexus free on AT&T if upgrade eligible

So I'm about to sign up with AT&T post paid plan (would love Tmo but I need better coverage and I need more data than AT&T prepaid or Straight Talk allow) but I want a Nexus. I'm going to therefore buy the iphone with the new plan subsidy and immediately resell it for a $300 profit that will essentially pay for the Nexus. Anyone else doing this? Any issue I should be aware of?

There used to be an issue with the data plans between iPhones and all other smartphones. I don't know if it's still an issue. I'd just ask at the AT&T store. Tell them that you have an Android phone you'd like to use occasionally and if there is a problem popping the sim from the iPhone into the Android.

Just be aware that the iPhone 5 uses a nano sim and the nexus 4 uses a micro sim, so you'll need an adapter.

Not a bad idea, just be sure to order it online so they mail it to you and it's still brand new and the box isn't opened, thus giving you maximum resale value.

Also see if once you switch to the Nexus you can find someone at AT&T who will put you on the "unlimited data for non-smartphones" that I have. I get the same speeds as the 5GB plan (we checked repeatedly) and it's unlimited. I've also confirmed that hotspot works, though I haven't used it all that much so I don't know if they'll notice if you use lots of data. Worth a try and good luck!

Once he's switched he can just bring it in and they'll switch it out for free. They did that for me coming from the Note i717 with it's regular sized sim.

Have you checked craiglist for people who are trying to transfer responsibility of their accounts? I did this when I left AT&T early. You take over an existing account, which should mean no new setup fees and the other person gets to leave without a cancellation fee. If they don't have the plan you want, you can change it when you do the transfer. Saves you the trouble of buying a new phone and reselling it. Order the N4 and do the transfer, much easier process.

He would have to pay for the Nexus 4 then though. With his plan he makes enough profit from the iPhone sale to buy the Nexus 4.

He pays $200 for the iPhone, resells it for $300, saves $100 and jumps through more hoops. I guess it depends on how much his time is worth, I'd rather lose the $100 and go the simpler route. But to each his own. I was just bringing up the option because not a lot of people know it exists.

He said sell it for a $300 profit so I assume he has someone lined up to buy it for $500. If that's the case he'll break even buying a Nexus 4 and still have a 2 year contract.

If I misunderstood and he meant $300 net profit, and not $300 gross profit, then by all means go for it.

Or just waltz into an at&t store and get a Micro sim and have them activate it for you! I wouldn't go the adaptor route, messes with the prongs and its very easy to destroy your sim slot...
