Help Newbie question about screen time out

HI, my Note is set at 30 secs for timeout. However today, writing an S Note, it never timed out, even when placed away from me. Going back to home screen, it does time out. Am I missing a setting somewhere?

  • Smart stay (is that checked)?
EDIT I just realized this is for the 10.1 which I don't currently have. Was replying thinking it was the Note 2. I don't know if the 10.1 has smart stay which keeps the screen from timing out.

Yes, smart stay is checked....but it didn't time out even if the Note was far away from my line of sight. Also, I assume that Smart stay would work on home screen AND an Snote? So I didn't think that was responsible.
One of the things I've deduced from smart stay is that it doesn't always look for "line of sight."
It can catch a light reflection and think you're still looking at the screen.
We assume it needs to make "eye" contact in order to function properly.
I've had mine time out with smart stay in use because the room wasn't well lit at the time.

Check out your bolded sentence- Smart stay is not app dependent. As long as the screen is lit thats what matters- besides, it'd have to be in order to use the app.

Oh, that's an interesting thought. So I just went and covered the whole Note (while in an S note) and waited a full minute, and it still stays on. Malfunction?
I cant say it's a malfunction. In theory the features are great but not always what we expect. How often do you power down your tablet? I have the Note 2 and if I've been good Santa will bring me a 10.1. Every phone/tablet I always factory reset before 1st use and power on/off once a day to clear bugs out.

Thanks for the suggestions. I power off every day and actually just tried it again to see if it will change this issue. I actually don't really mind it staying on but I guess it should do what it is supposed to do.
I would do what it's supposed to do in a perfect world. :p
In the meantime, enjoy your tablet.
Next you'll start looking for other things "wrong" and what fun would that be? :D
