RAZR HD display is just too dim for me....

I found the RAZR HD and MAXX in a corporate store and played with it for about an hour. I was able to get a double tap of the home button to bring up the google voice now microphone which was a big relief because that is the one thing that had to work right. The method of swiping up from the home key doesn't work because you have to press the microphone in the upper right corner. I have to be able to do this while driving without looking at the screen. It's already iffy given that I may not be able to locate the on screen home button vs the physical button of my S3.

But the one thing that left me puzzled as I left the store was just how dim the display was. I disabled auto on both phones and set both to maximum brightness. The display was already quite a bit dimmer on the RAZR maxx. But then I ran Chrome on both and navigated to the google search page so they were both displaying the mostly the white google search page. The RAZR HD, both of them, were at least 30% dimmer than my S3. In fact, the RAZR HD looked dimmer than any display of any phone in the entire store and they had real running examples of just about every model.

This is pretty much a deal killer. Is there anything else to do to get the display brighter?

It's quite possible that store demo phone has some type of issue with it. My RMHD is very bright when I put it on the brightest level. Too bright in fact. I generally run it between 20 and 50%.

As for the Google issue - you do not need to press the microphone. You swipe up the home button and then just say "Google" and that activates voice input for you.

But quite honestly, it appears that you really don't want this phone. Every post you write is a negative one about something that just isn't right for you with this phone. I for one am tired of trying to convince you that this is a great phone. In fact, you are correct - this is a terrible phone. Don't give it another thought. I think you should go with the Samsung Galaxy S3! ) Yes, I'm trying to be funny.)

And you'll see I did *exactly* the same thing on the S3 before buying it.

The problem is I really *want* the phone. I really want the superior motorola build quality and I really *want* a real car dock again that charges that I don't have to fight with.

Right now, the screen brightness is the deal killer. The S3 brightness was almost an issue but now it appears it may be the brighter of the AMOLED displays.

I would buy that it could be in issue with one deme phone if I hadn't already pointed out that both demo phones are identically dim when brightness is set to max.

Talk to the sales person. Tell him/her you want the Motorola if the screen is bright enough. Tell him/her you want to check the brand new one right out of the box. If it is too dim then you will go with the other one (after checking it brand new out of the box).

Bottom line ... you are assuming the demo unit is representative. In various purchases in the past I have wondered how they ever sell anything with some of the demo units I have handled.

Analysis to Paralysis. We all have it! I was quite happy with S3. But there were a few things that made me switch. 1) Battery life, of course. Though I had an external battery for the S3. 2) GSM. This was a key factor. When you travel, CDMA isn't going to cut it. 3) Build quality. Somewhat of a minor factor for me, but once I had the maxx, I realized that S3 was somewhat "plastic'y"

Most other things (wifi, 4G, speaker, phone etc.) were about the same. S3 had a few more tweaks that I liked (using a different picture for the lock screen vs home screen) but overall, I'd say it's a neck and neck race.

Just checked my brightness setting and it's on approximately 55%. My old eyes like things bright to see well, but if I set this phone any brighter, it'll blind me. My screen is anything but dim.

Ambient lighting can make a big difference. I suppose you have to see S3 and RMHD at the same time. I didn't think there were appreciable differences between the two.

I couldn't disagree more, I think the screen is one of the strong points on this phone. I showed mine to several iphone owners and they all commented on how nice and bright the screen is.

I also think screen brightness is good. It's surely pro of this phone, not con. At 50% or above, it's way too bright for me indoors.

You absolutely were looking at a Razr HD with a defective screen. I've had the S3 and have moved on to the Razr Maxx HD and I can say without a doubt that the Razr has a brighter screen on both the autobrightness setting and at full brightness.
