Best way to backup contacts before ROM update?

I'm going to keep this as simple as possible......

I presume after the update I'll have to set everything back up (email accounts, ringtones, volumes, notifications, scenes)? I can copy my music and pictures onto my PC and I don't care about SMS.

I'll have to re-install apps and set them all back up too.

All I care about are my contacts really. I don't want to use HTC sync as that wants to copy them to Outlook and I keep my work contacts in outlook (not my personal ones). I don't use my google account for anything other than the market so I don't really want to sync with google.

Can I just copy them all to the SIM card? Will I lose pics and facebook links?

Hi mate. After much humming and aaaarring I finally did the Orange HTC Update last night. I found an app that copies contacts from your PHONE to your SIM. I have been searching for months but finally found one. You can see it here Cyrket - Contact2Sim Pro , and there is actually a free version on the market if you search for Contact2Sim. I copied them all over, and initially it looked like it hadnt worked, as when I clicked HOME > PEOPLE > MENU > VIEW - It said 0 SIM Contacts. If that happens, simply turn off your phone and turn it back on again, and the copy will show up as done once it starts up again.

But yeah the Official update went as smoothly and as quickly as possible - the phone is quicker, sharper, HTC Mail now accepts HTML Coded emails now rather than just text only too which is a nice addition. All my apps went but it took no time to put them back on

All my contacts are automatically backed up to the Gmail contacts directory so that when I entered my gmail details into the replacement Hero I got, it downloaded them all automatically.

No backups required, which is good as given the number of comments on this forum about backup programs causing issues after the firmware update I wanted to avoid this.

I thought this was the way the Hero / Android worked as default?

Some peoples contacts are saved to 'Phone' instead of 'Google', and therefore arent synced to Google Contacts

Plus of course you can enable google syncing, sync to google, export all your contacts to a CSV file for safekeeping, upgrade the phone, sync all the contacts back down from google, then disable google sync on the phone, then delete them all from the google account and they will then be left on the phone.
