I5700 Galaxy Spica/lite officially gets Android 2.1

Been following this thread for a few weeks - reckoned it was just a waiting game to get the official upgrade in UK, but following some of the latest posts I am not so sure...

People who have rightly or wrongly posted on this thread about using Odin, seem to have had entirely positive experiences - or am I missing something? What are the downsides, aside from possible loss of warranty? Assuming the upgrade process goes smoothly, what is the likelihood I will subsequently need to return it under warranty and be turned down? If the phone died altogether or say the battery or display failed who is going to know or care what firmware I had?;)

The other question I had was if I do unofficial upgrade and then the official one does actually come out, would I need to downgrade to 1.5 first to get it to work and if so where do I find the official 1.5 to flash as there doesn't seem to be a way to back up firmware?

Any answers appreciated - I am a newcomer to the world of smartphones, but no stranger to flashing other devices so I am confident I could upgrade without a problem

Strange as Samsung use ODin to program the phones!

My thoughts also as it's mentioned and documented in the service manual - http://androidforums.com/samsung-ga...-galaxy-spica-lite-portal-service-manual.html

But I suspect this is not a 'supported' method for general users - but it seems a reliable and effective way of upgrading the phone (with a bit of technical know how).

As for "got-petrol - just phoned t mobile they don't support android 2.1" - strange as the HTC Desire is on T Mobile and uses 2.1 :) - unless they mean they don't support 2.1 on the Portal! But would you really call a mobile provider about OS issues when much more knowledge and experience on the web? As far as I am concerned the travesty here is that the NPS provided in the boxed product is defective and not fit for purpose (as in version 1.3 of NPS). The only risk is if you flash the phone unofficially with 2.1 - have a hardware fault which prevents another flash back to 1.5 before returning to T Mobile and they refuse to replace the phone due to the OS version (assuming they officially issue a statement specifying they only support phones with the shipped OS - doubtful(?) due to the lack of any specific T-Mobile skins/mods/branding in the OS - making it a T Mobile 'version')

got-petrol and others - what are the best phone numbers to call for T-Mobile and Samsung UK support to clarify the 2.1 update?

Cheers

HTC updates need HTC software, so it'd need NPS.

It's just a case of them putting the file on the server for us to download. Hardly a difficult thing to do.

All they have to do is add a T-mobile homepage/bookmark, WNW shortcut on the home screen, and T-mobile animation at start up. That's all the customisation they do to their phones!

Hi there, we do not have an exact date for release but I do know that you do not have long to wait. Once released we will tweet. Thanks"

Looks like released soon and T Mobile recognise the fact at least. I can live with 1.5 till then.

Cheers
