Root Custom ROMs - What have you tried?

I've been checking back periodically on the progress of custom ROMs and they seem to be picking up speed now that we can unlock our bootloaders. Aviator looks kinda cool but RageHD seems to be my favorite so far.

Who out there is using a custom ROM right now? What have you tried and how has the experience been, generally speaking?

I read through a few pages of the RageHD ROM postings and on guy said you don't even need to have the bootloader unlocked to install the RageHD ROM. Is this true?

Still on the fence. I love my current set up and it does everything I want. But if I can eek out a little more performance (better battery life and smoother scrolling) while at the same time block any future OTA's, a custom ROM just might (finally) be worth it.

Let me know what you know. And thanks!

There's a lot of great 4.2.x ports out there (carbon, pacman, paranoidandroid, xenonhd) but they all share the same bugs until hashcode finishes the new 4.2 kernel. Funky mms, no video recording, etc.

It is true that RageHD does not require an unlocked bootloader as it works with the stock kernel. Nitroglycerine33 just released eclipse rom for the hd but it requires unlocked bootloader. It's 4.1.2 based so everything works. He made a great eclipse rom for the og maxx and is pretty good with updating it so that's what I will be running until the 4.2 roms are stable.

I never could get Rage to boot, so I don't really know how that is. But it's true, you do not need to unlock the bootloader since it's 4.1.2 stock based ROM. Each blur based ROM I've tried though always bogged down or had some weird issue, and I always found myself coming back to stock.

As far as my ROM history/experiences, I've loved Vitreous but that seems to be dead now, although I know the dev has been really busy, so it could be just that. Fuzion always seems to bog down after a few weeks and went to shit for some reason. CM10.1 has been my daily driver for the past 3 weeks. Rock solid and stable, the only problem is the camcorder doesnt work with it, until Hash's kernel is complete. Carbon had a few issues such as no LED, hot phone, a few reboots. I keep coming back to the 4.2.2 ROMs though because I love the expanded desktop options, looks fantastic on this phone.

I agree with Admack though, Eclipse looks seriously sweet. If you plan on unlocking the bootloader eventually, you may as well do it and install that, I plan on using it next.

I this is somewhat old, but do you know if that Eclipse 4.1.2 ROM has the Google Apps installed for it? I plan on trying this ROM out as my first one later tonight.

Truthfully I'm not sure. I never got around to trying Eclipse because most of the CM10.1 issues were resolved. I searched through the entire thread, and I see no mention of gapps, so if I had to hazard a guess, I'd say it came with them preinstalled. It would make sense since it's a 4.1.2 ROM though. Although if it weren't installed, I'm not really sure which gapps package you would want either, since I'm not sure what would go on 4.1.2. Regardless, you do need an unlocked bootloader for Eclipse so once you do unlock it, make a backup of stock and give it a shot. Restoration takes like 10 minutes so its not difficult to fix if there's a problem.

Well I have been running this Eclipse ROM for about 2 days now. So far everything had been great except now I've found that group MMS doesn't work at ALL. I have it checked in the settings to send and receive all Group MMS messages but it still doesn't work. I've also unchecked "Use dark theme" and rebooted...everything is still dark.

Is there any ROM out there that has EVERYTHING working?! I was so happy this ROM had the native tethering working perfectly, but I need group MMS to work also. I'm about ready to restore my backup of the stock ROM.

I just tried tethering on the ROM I'm using, jelly beer, and it worked for me. I only used it for a minute and I don't have unlimited, so I can't confirm that it'll be perfect or great or anything. Other people that posted on another forum said that tethering works for them.

And it looks like group MMS works, I just tested that, too. It looks like it worked when I sent it to my cousin and brother.

The only problem, and I found this out after playing baseball superstars for an hour and a half, is that games sometimes freeze up. It only popped up.after an hour and a half for me, but it happened for someone else posting on another forum. Closing the game out and going back in works, though.

Check it out, and if you don't mind flashing ROMs, give it a shot:

Of course, keep in mind, YMMV.

Thanks I'll check it out! I just flashed LiquidSmooth and it's running pretty good.
