my sister just gave me an LG esteem from metro and the menu, home, back, and search buttons do not work, they light up but are unresponsive. the rest of my touch screen works just fine. anyone have an idea of what may be causing just that portion of my screen to not work?

Is there any way to get a response from the buttons? I have seen before where someone was able to get them to respond if they sqeezed the sides of the phone real hard, or maybe if you just pressed very firmly on the buttons themselves? If so, this indicated a physical hardware problem and may not be easily fixed (possibly a digitizer came disconnected).
You could give Button savior a try if you're rooted, otherwise I think a Factory Reset is about your only hope (that I can think of).

my initial thought was that perhaps the digitizer needs to be replaced, but no neither squeezing the phone nor pressing on the soft keys very firmly allows me to use them, I have done a factory reset with no success. perhaps that is an indication that the digitizer in fact does need to be replaced, and to my knowledge the phone is not rooted. Would a factory reset unroot the phone if it is in fact rooted?

the phone does say "number two(#2)" on the top right when i turn the screen on before i slide the screen lock that brings me to the home screen, im guessing that is an indication the phone is rooted?

I'm sorry, but I don't recognize that. I don't know enough about that phone to tell you an answer confidently.

the phone does have a Superuser app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.noshufou.android.su.elite&hl=en) from that link installed.

That might be a good sign! Try the (root required version) app I linked to earlier and if it works, well, it works!

so i downloaded a couple different root checker apps and they both indicated that the phone does not have root access and that my phone is not rooted and that there is no SU access. additionally I downloaded a terminal app and entered the command "su" and got the "$" indicating that the phone is not rooted. so perhaps im just looking at replacing the digitizer after all.
