New phone, No tracking [paranoidMode ON]

even if you disable e911 tracking and the GPS, soon as you make a call, even on a feature phone, they know where you are by cellular triangulation. my phone runs a custom ROM with the e911 stuff disabled since i'd do anything possible to prevent profiling. at least with cellular triangulation they don't have their drones watching you. e911 is what you see in CSI when they look for potential criminals. with that turned off you turn them off. the predator drones would bomb the tower but leave you unscathed

It's never been "illegal" to root an Android device in the EU. However it will void the manufacturer's warranty as it alters the installed device software, something that all warranties specifically exclude.

Well well well, i see a lot of answer, i feel very welcomed

My problem is not to give information to my phone carrier or my government, but i don't want to have a device wich turn me into a product for the giant marketing company named google, or facebook, or whatever...

for the root i forget some word, I think. i know that it's not illegal. How can it be if i own the device

I'm sorta doing the same thing about marketing. So far, except for the few "free" apps I have, I haven't seen any.

I buy the apps, and do leave GPS on as some of my astronomy programs demand it. My Location setting is used by Weatherbug. Since the weather here can vary by altitude in the same zip code, I use it.

I don't use Google's location service.

I don't have social anything on the phone. I can access Flickr, Twitter, but if I do, I disable them immediately after.

I also don't use most of Google's services. I prefer my groups at Yahoo, so no+ or whatever they call it now. I don't need maps, nor do I care about anything in this town. So I don't need that service.

I get mail through a different service. You can use the mail on the phone and set up a POP3 or IMAP account. I have a couple of different accounts with different mail services, and Aquamail gets them all. So will K9 and most of the other good ones.

I also do a lot of stuff on the computer where I can block with a firewall, or a Firefox extension called NoScript. I can turn images off with another extension. Since a lot of ads use the image tag, I don't see them.

I do use MS, Yahoo, Google, Android, Amazon, and won't use any of them entirely.

Read everything you can here - we have a lot of posters that are very knowledgeable and fair. We do have fanboys, but you can take them with a grain of salt.

I used to work with radio commercials, we got every damn trade mag, and I did read them.

Here you also have to deal with carrier bloat. The carriers add programs to whatever phone they are selling. Google does have a vanilla Android phone called the Nexus. I have the S and the 4, both are rooted. The S is running Cyanogen mod. Still looking(mostly for time) on the 4

You might find a used one. I got the S used from Amazon.

I'm not paranoid, just overly cynical and want to be a PITA.

thanks for your answer some stuff you wrote make a lot of sense, also with no script don't forget to install adblock and do not track me. The phone i decided to buy ( Wiko cink peax) is unlocked, wich isn't really a option here : every phone are sold unlocked and with a "clean" android. i think i will create a new gmail account also. But the device isn't supported by cyanogen ...

i wanted to get a Nexus 4 but they are 120€ ~ 150$ more expensive in europe... and the S was overpriced on amazon or other online store for a 2 and a half year old phone

and also what's a PITA ?

What do you do with used phones over there? We have Craigslist (unreliable at times) Swappa, Ebay, this site has a for sale forum. I'd like to know as I gave my kid a Panasonic FZ5 a few years ago as I wanted a camera that shot RAW. She really liked my Canon SX30 IS, and when the SX50 came out which does shoot RAW, I gave her the 30.
Told her to sell the Panny. Do they have places for used electronics there?

Used phone don't really have interresting price (the Nexus4 cost around 340€, used it cost 300€ and it's still 80€ more than a new one in US ...) , i would rather buy a new one with 2year warranty than a used one who can brake anytime.

But we do have website or store for used goods and also ebay, i bought all my bikes on those kind of website. But... i don't like the idea for electronics ( mainly because I don't have the knowledge to repair it if there is a problem ). Also I try to keep my device as long as possible, my blackberry have 3year and a half now and i hope it will work till my amazon package arrive. So in my point of view used phone is not my cup of tea

Actually, don't believe movie BS, you do not need to make a call: as soon as the phone is turned on and connects to the network, it can be triangulated.

When I worked for one of the operators a while back, my boss had his personal phone stolen. He had a chat with the network people and was then able to go to the thief's home, knock on the door and politely request the return of his (locked but still turned on) phone. No calls had been made.

He got the phone back, BTW.

I'd like to know how to get a similar custom ROM or some information on how where in the kernel the function is or where the call is made to the GPS hardware so I could redirect it. I have some source but I don't know exactly what I'm looking for. I don't know the hardware address of the GPS chip to look for that. I would be nice if I could just misdirect a jump table.

From what I've seen of cellular towers they have antennas with about a 45 degree radiation angle. Even with really good triangulation they have, at minimum, a few square miles to search if the gps is disabled. A gps routine that offset the returned location a mile in a random direction would be really cool.

I still intend to be a PITA about it. On one hand, not buy anything recommended. If I do want it, I'll get it from an independent source and lie about where I heard about the product. On the other side, I am NOT brand loyal.

BTW, some security measures don't count on altitude or telephoto. Living higher than a local tower doesn't help, either.
