looking for an "activate screen" application

I'm using my phone (lenovo p780 android 4.2) a lot and every time I need to "wake up" the screen by pressing the "on/off" buton

Is there an app that enables me to do it otherwise (for example- touching the screen) instead of wearing off my power key?

yes, I know it'll "cost" me some battery usage, hoping to find app with minimal power consumption

Liked the idea of this so looked at the apps mentioned above. Personally preferred the look of autoscreen on off as I have a cover on my S3 and thought this was more suited to me than the gravity one which seems to work when you turn your phone upside down as you place it in your pocket. Anyway have installed autoscreen on off and first impressions are that I like it. Will try it for a few days to see how it impacts on battery life. Thank you.

If it uses the proximity sensor, it should be pretty efficient.
I use Dynamic Notifications which is a different idea but uses the prox' sensor and battery use is negligible

Remember to set the app to temporarily disable in landscape mode to reduce the number of times it shuts down your screen in error.

Gravity was most useful on my tablet, which would sit on a table, not in my pocket, most of the day. I'd go for the proximity sensor-based ones for a phone.

Yep, any app that is constantly monitoring a sensor (either proximity or accelerometer) is also going to be constantly waking up the processor to perform those checks. This keeps your phone from getting a good night's sleep (or, more accurately, entering the power-saving deep sleep mode where the processor is essentially powered off). Phones like the Moto X which have such an auto-on function actually have dedicated processing hardware just for that purpose, so they're able to do it without the huge battery impact.

I've also seen battery saving apps that claim a 70% reduction in battery drain, so I take claims by app developers with a spoonful of salt

I suppose that one is worth a shot - but keep in mind that the screen won't automatically turn on when you pick up the device unless the app is periodically waking to check the acclerometer state. Apps like these have an inversely-proportional relationship between battery life and responsiveness/reliability.

I find that the accelerometer uses a lot more power than the prox' sensor.
i use motion wake on Dynamic Notifications but the accelerometer is only active when the prox sensor is uncovered so while the phone is in my pocket or face down, the accelerometer isnt active.
At home i dont care about battery so the phone is sat next to me, screen up so when i pick it up it wakes the DN screen so i can see notifications or the time or whatever and swipe to unlock or maximise a notification. I never have to use the power button
