Root [Virgin Mobile] Rooting Samsung Victory for use with FreedomPop

I have never rooted a smartphone, but it appears I may need to in order to enable wifi hotspot functionality through my carrier FreedomPop. In reading through the various posts regarding rooting this phone (in particular for Virgin Mobile), I am left with the impression that I will need a carrier specific ROM. Is that correct? Any other insight or abuse would be greatly appreciated as I try to get up to speed on this subject. Thanks much.

Also, The_Victorian said that towelroot works as well for rooting the victory.

I thought FreedomPop used Sprint phones.
And from what I've seen, you do need a carrier specific Rom.
And I have not found any Sprint Roms for the Victory.

You don't need a ROM to root. You flash twrp through Odin then flash busybox and SuperSU through twrp. That's it.

When it comes to custom recovery (usually the first step in rooting), the "goghspr" TWRP works for sprint and VM Victory's.

Just follow the directions in the rooting thread that was linked by madbat.
Remember also that 2.6.3.0 is the last working TWRP for this phone. DO NOT FLASH 2.7+ as they have issues with making and restoring backups.

I'd like to do this to save money but also so I don't lose my contacts, apps, etc, will I lose everything if I root it?

And if I don't like freedompop and want to return to virgin mobile, can I do so? Thanks!

If you don't know what supersu , busybox, twrp, etc are, I would not recommend rooting. These are very basic components to rooting. SuperSU manages root access for apps, twrp is custom recovery (2.6.3 and 2.7 refer to versions of it) busybox is more than I can explain in a few words.my suggestion, do some more reading and research before rooting to see if you even need it. I don't know what it takes to switch carriers but I'm sure some others here do.

You do not have to root your phone to use it on FreedomPop (FP), I bought a Victory for Sprint and was able to connect it to FP and then rooted it. But I still don't know if you can use a Virgin Mobile phone on FP. Go to the FP website and the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) section and they will ask you to enter your ESN, if they say the ESN is good then your phone should work on FreedomPop.

I just entered the # from my VM Victory and it looks like it will work.. Wonder if any of the cheap ones will port..

I am giving my old victory to my daughter. She wants to use it on freedompop. Currently it has the conquest Rom on it.

Question for you freedompop folks. .. can I leave the conquest rom on it and still activate it on FP?

Thanks to Phandroid and others, I was able to root with towelroot and install RedSpot 0.4 on my victory. It has noticeably gotten faster.
Now, I was wodering if i can root and install a compatible ROM (i need to find out if there's any) for my HTC EVO 4G and still use it on FreedomPOP. It is already configured as a freedompop phone, but I'm worried if I will be able to continue using it as Freedompop phone after rooting and flashing it with a new ROM.

Make a nandroid backup first. then try a custom rom(s). If the custom rom(s) doesn't work then restore the backup.

Btw, anybody successfully root freedompop Samsung Victory?
I was told by freedompop that rooting their original stock ROM might fail their call and text function
since those freedompop function are based on VOIP like
Is it true or just to scare freedompop customer ?
