Root [Verizon] Can't Update to KitKat, Lost Root Too

Well, I downloaded the "I535VRUDNE1" file (I535VRUDNE1_I535VZWDNE1_VZW.zip) from the link Mike provided above and extracted it to a folder with the same name (minus the .zip extension, of course).

Does your .zip file match the size of the one above?

(do we have the same files?)

The only thing that seems off is the .md5 file. Mine is 1,578,516,559 bytes; it's about 150% larger than yours.

Edit: Nevermind. It's about the same as yours; I mistook the zip file for the unzipped. Yes. We have the same files.

No, that's the right size...here's what I showed from the above (I'll go back and edit to bold and make red):

Code:
05/23/2014 02:20 PM [COLOR="Red"][B]1,578,516,559[/B][/COLOR] I535VRUDNE1_I535VZWDNE1_I535VRUDNE1_HOME.tar.md5

So, I'm wondering if you just have to change the filtering criteria in Odin to "all files" or whatever it is (I've never used Odin :p) to allow you to see the .md5 file (or maybe you're not pointing to the directory where you extracted it? :dontknow:).

I don't think I can change it to all files. The actual folder itself won't show up either. I'm lost... Google isn't helping me too much either. Not sure what information I can provide either.

Hi. Sorry for the late reply.. Had to work late
In one of your previous posts you said you started recovery mode... You should be in download mode..home/volumedown/power. Recovery is home/volume up/power.
And where did you extract the firmware zip to?
I'll check back tomorrow... I am wiped out Lol..gotta be up in 5hours;)

No problem, I'm in no rush.

Yes, I'm doing all of that. I extracted the files to a folder I created inside my downloads folder. But the folder I created won't show up under Odin when I try to find it. Neither will the extracted files themselves.

consider yourself lucky. don't do it, stay on 4.3

A lot of applications that I want to use are demanding I upgrade. Plus, the fact that I have to keep downloading a 1 gigabyte package every day just to get the "There's new software available! DOWNLOAD IT NOW!" notification out of my face every 10 seconds is annoying. And sometimes it does it while I'm away from home, so it eats up 1 gig of data just like that. Unless you can give me a really good reason to stay on 4.3, I'm upgrading.

Well, I got done downloading the firmware .zip file.
I extracted it to my downloads folder.
I fired up Odin 3.09, clicked on the "AP" box, and it found the md5 file no problem.

Now, the only thing I did differently, is I did not open Odin as Administrator.
I would suggest if you still have the issue, either uninstall Odin, reinstall and try it again.

Or, we could try Odin 3.07..

Side note, because I cannot quite see your screen shot, when ODIN looks for the files, is the criteria for searching set to "PDA File (*.tar, *.md5, *.smd, *.gz, *.tgz)" ?

Then I would suggest flashing the firmware from Sammobile via ODIN:
Firmwares | SamMobile | Page 3
that should put you right at 4.4.2 ;)

I'm using this link and then the Odin link within it. Are we all using the same version of Odin? Mine is Odin3_v3.09, emphasis on that 3. Right now, I'm trying to relunctantly redownload the hour long firmware file to see if that helps.

I'm trying to download other versions of Odin, but if I try anything other than the one from Mikestony's link, my anti-virus calls it out on spyware.

Yes, that is the version I was using also--Odin3_v3.09
There is an earlier version also Odin3_v3.07 that I have used successfully too.

I just don't understand why your ODIN does not pick up on the .md5 file. :hmmmm:
Maybe I missed you posting it, but can you navigate to that file when you click on the "AP" box? (if ODIN does not automatically find it)
Then once you find it, double click on the .md5 file?

by the way, here is the version 3.07 that I used...a trustworthy download:)

Me neither. No matter where I put the .md5 file, it won't show up under either Odins. I tried putting it strait on my desktop, no folders, and it still can't find it.

And I forgot to answer that one question you asked earlier. Yes. Odin is set to PDA File (*.tar, *.md5, *.smd, *.gz, *.tgz).

Quick question. If I factory reset, does that mean that I lose all of my apps and their save data?
If so, does that also include Play Store purchases?

O.k...can you just manually navigate to the .md5 and select it then? It should load into ODIN. (I've not had your issue so I'm not sure)

Yes if you factory reset your phone, you will lose apps and data from your phone.
Your google account will remember your purchases so you can redownload them without cost, but the data will be gone.

WOO! I took my problems, and pushed them somewhere else.
I downloaded Odin and the firmware to my brother's computer and everything worked there. I'm successfully on 4.4.2 KitKat now!

Thanks for all of your help, everybody! I would have been stuck forever if it wasn't for all of you! Really, I'm amazed you all stuck it through with me until this point.

Now, as for rooting, I'm still unrooted, and SuperSU can't find or install the su binaries. Does anybody know the best thing I can do to recover root?

According to this, (post 36 and on), Towelroot will work to get root :) (click on the icon to download the app) or, here is the XDA link too:)

Edit: oh, and by the way, your AV might say it's a harmful/dangerous when downloading, but its not ;)

YOU. ARE. ALL. AMAZING!
You guys resolved all of my issues. I did the right thing coming here. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Is there any way that I can give you all a hug, high five, gold star, or anything of the sort in return for all of your help?
