Android Lollipop?

So has this already been released or what...? Didn't they literally like.. just release Kit Kat this year? or was that released last year with the Note 3?

Speaking of version 5.0, didn't they say it would come out in November 3rd? because i just checked my Nexus 10 and no dice. says up to date. Please tell me they are even supporting the 10 anymore because KitKat was a major disappointment (no ART, no transparent bars, nothing--still looks like JB) and i was hoping that version 5.0 would redeem the Nexus 10 somehow.

There were some reports of a slight delay in rolling it out, but I believe it's still scheduled to come to the N10.

It was released on November 3rd, as that's when the nexus 9 running lollipop went on sale and when source began being pushed to AOSP.

Tech blogs speculated the OTA's would be going out then as well, which was wrong.

I'm betting Nov 12th, since thats when the nexus 6 embargo ends.

Factory images aren't out yet either, except for the nexus 9 and new nexus player.

If it makes you feel better, the Moto X (2014) is starting to receive it already.

I'm stoked. I really hope my N4 gets it on the 12th and not 3 or 4 weeks later. As my Gapps continue to update, I grow more and more fond of Material Design.

Nick, I think you're going to love the changes to SD cards. They're throwing out the KitKat restrictions.

How do people with the G3 get it now? i have a LG G3 and the only update it got was last night and i noticed nothing. still showing Android version 4.4.2 in settings.

I never noticed any 'restrictions' regarding SD Cards (no apps i used ever had issues with it in KK) but my big concern was that Google is pushing manufacturers to ditch them, making most of their own apps default to the cloud and of course, no sign of a MicroSD card slot in any new Nexus specs.

Material Design has me drooling as well, but then again any departure from the throwback to the 1980s era of computing that Flat Design has been doing is welcome. Although i doubt i'll see much change with the G3, since the skin from leaked screenshots remains the same flatness and lack of dimension, with only the recent apps switcher and notification 'cards' showing any remnant of 3-D polish. I am running Nova with a L Theme to make up for it at the moment.

I am loving the improved and revamped Play Store and Google Apps myself, not just their nicer icons, but the fact that for the first time ever i've yet to encounter any of the common download errors i've had to expect since Android Market became Google Play.

Source is out, so chances are the g3 has it via a custom ROM. The moto x only has it as a soak test for those that opted into the equivalent of beta builds, not an official release

Is root required to make the Source Code install? i'm just a bit impatient. i'd hate to wait until next year to get it on my G3.

If it's running on a G3 already, it's 100% certainly a custom ROM.

I'm encouraged though by the fact that a lot of OEMs seem to be scrambling to get it out fast this time. Samsung, Moto, HTC. Hopefully this puts pressure on LG as well.

There are leaks of the G3 having 5.0 already, but since the factory images are not yet out, i'd be doubtful there are already custom ROMS out there. besides, all the root exploits for the G3 have been patched. i tried many without success.

It's a custom ROM. They don't build them off the factory images, they build them off the source code, which was dropped on Nov 3. It's most likely not a polished build yet, but it is up and running. As to how to root the G3, that's certainly way out of my area of knowledge.

So far the only phone that has received a factory OTA update to Lollipop is the Moto X (2014).

Custom Roms don't need the factory images, only source code.

Many of the nexus devices have Roms running 5.0 already. All the developers need are the source and drivers/binaries.

It wouldn't, it would be AOSP

the screenshots i'm seeing are stock though, not AOSP. has all the LG stuff in there. you can see it in the LG G3 forum, first post at top. there are obvious screenshots of not only the LG skin, but also setting up Smart Notice, settings menu, etc. the user has also posted in the Android Lounge as well, but uses an animated GIF to show all the screenshots. it's obviously the LG Skin though, not AOSP. he somehow got an OTA i have no idea how.

That looks like a leak for a specific variant (Korean), and not an official OTA

Its a leak, not an OTA, and it only works for the korean variant. Its also not stable.

Saw a funny comment on AP that said "Given Google's track record with the Hangouts/Voice integration, iPhone users will have Lollipop before the Nexus".

I lol'ed pretty hard at that one.

iPhone already has some of the things that Lollipop is introducing. Google's implementation is a lot nicer to look at, though.

Lockscreen notification cards, while limited and part of TouchWiz since the Galaxy S2, have been standard fare since the first iPhone in 2007. it's a feature that has been missing in AOSP until this new update and i'm happy to see it as well.

ART is the closest Android will get to having the buttery smooth stutter-free scrolling that iPhone users have had since day one as well. i tested it with a custom ROM on my old S3 and i loved the results, can't wait to see them finally land on the Nexus 10.

Hopefully this will bring more iOS users to Android and thus triple the rankings. Overall, though, most of the UIs today maintain some level of consistency unlike in the past, where i'd once pick up an iPad after months of using a Galaxy Tab and forget where x feature was in y.

No more. thank goodness! i use many different types of devices. i am appreciating some level of continuity between different platforms for a change. Also hoping that Material Design takes off since flat design looks horridly dated to me.
