I emailed HTC today asking about 2.2 for the Hero. This is the response. Make of it what you want!!! LOL

Dear Kiran, Thank you for your email. We are considering the 2.2 (FroYo) upgrade for some models of our phones, but we are still analyzing the impact this will have on the user experience. We will announce a full list of phones and dates once we are closer to launching the upgrades. We are working closely with Google and our other partners to ensure we have the earliest access to everything we need to provide a complete and solid HTC Sense experience on Froyo. We expect to release all updates in the second half of this year but can't be more specific yet. I trust that this resolve's your query, please do not hesitate to contact us again if required. Kind Regards, Alex HTC Europe

I too find it hard to believe the Hero will ever see 2.2.

As I see it HTC can do one of the following:

1. Finish that cursed 2.1 update to get all those furious Hero owners (us :)) off their backs and then abandon the Hero while they can.

2. As mentioned earlier in this thread: Announce a 2.2 update instead of a 2.1 update "at a not yet specified date in the future". ..but why? By the time they can fulfill that promise no one will be using the Hero anymore and all those furious Hero owners (us :))will have moved on to better phones/non-HTC phones.

3. Simply abandon the Hero and take all those furious Hero owners (us :)) as a lesson learned: "Do not make promises you can't keep".

Honestly, I think HTC sells so many phones that they do not care much about the Hero anymore. The Hero owners are weak.. seriously: how many threads on this forum have you read, where some frustrated Hero owner complains about HTC and then says "but I don't care anymore.. Im getting a Legend/Desire/Evo." That doesn't exactly hurt HTC's wallets now, does it? ;)

I still hope for a 2.1 update, dream about a 2.2 update but expects no update.

"HTC is happy to announce that it has dropped the 2.1 update for its Hero phone in favour of developing for Froyo, Hero users can expect to see 2.2 sometime in early 2013

Oh cripes. The sad thing is, I felt my soul sink reading that because I don't see it as out of the realm of possibility.

I'm still on Cupcake with Telus. Hoping for an upgrade, but not sure if the next step will be that, rooting the Hero or going for the mysterious "Triumph" when and if it materializes.

I don't think there's a possibility of them skipping 2.1. I mean, they've already launched one version of 2.1, so we know it's got to be pretty much done.

Besides, keeping the Europeans in the dark whilst the Americans already have the update would be an even bigger PR disaster for HTC.

You're right! I'd forgotten they already pushed out the update for Sprint, didn't they? Well, that offers some hope at least. :)

I do think, however, that the Hero will not make the list for 2.2 and above. It's astounding how quickly things get out of date. That said, beyond the need for the bleeding edge, I'm pretty happy with it. Been with android for nearly a year, and it suits me well. Maybe I'll hold on for another year, upgrade to the latest with 3.0. :)

Custom ROMs are the beauty of the Android platform. There is no doubt in my mind that quite a few people will do their level best to get 2.2 on the Hero, whether it works or not is a different matter.

I'd be happy if HTC gave us a release date for 2.1 but quite frankly I've given up on that and will look to replace my Hero with a non HTC phone as soon as it's practical.

That said I still think the Hero is by far and away the best phone I've owned, sadly let down by HTCs customer service.

I think its time to face it Hero owners...

The Hero was the flagship Sense phone for HTC or face it a prototype for things to come from HTC.

I don't think HTC really want to be spending time developing future updates for the Hero when they have far superior phones on the market.

For me I still love my phone.

All phones in my opinion have a shelf life of about a year to 18 months. The latter being the length of an average phone contract.

I've had this phone nearly a year now and will be looking forward to what HTC bring to the table in another 6 months when my upgrade us due.

I really don't think we'll see 2.1 for another month or so at least.

I've had about 8 different 2.1 ROMs on now. To be honest its not life changing.

I think HTC made an awesome phone in the Hero but its coming to the end.

It's time for 1ghz processors, more onboard memory, better camera and the future in phones.

Long live the Hero it was the start of the future....

That's pretty much how I feel about it.

I was very fortunate to have been given the Hero by a friend who was getting the Nexus One.

The hero running 1.5 is a wonderful device and if 2.1 improves on that I'll be very happy until such a time I can afford to get a newer Android phone.

Having said that, if 2.2 is possible (unofficially or otherwise) it would be quite incredible.

Ha Ha,

I think HTC are making some brilliant phones at the moment.

When my contracts up in 5 months I'll see what other phones are on the market.

If a HTC phone is the best on the market. I wouldn't hesitate to purchase one.

The Hero has been a great phone. I've never had a phone this long and it hasn't got a single scratch on the screen.
