Latecomer to the smart phone

I got my HTC Hero phone at the beginning of October. Having several friends with iPhones and been impressed, I thought that would be the way to go. I then read reviews on the Hero and thought I'd be different. Of course I didn't know anyone else with an android phone and that's when your little oasis of knowledge proved invaluable, along with the Geek Squad at Carphone Warehouse. I've finally managed to get it together now, syncing both ways with google mail, contacts and calendar. The calendar was the difficult bit. Like lots of other people I'd read about, I could only sync from google on the PC to the phone and not the other way round. I now realise what I'd done wrong. Every time I added a new event on the phone, it was defaulting to "My Calendar". When I tapped the down arrow to change to my google account address (the first item at the head of the screen after pressing the add event cross) "name@googlemail.com" the event appeared soon after on the PC in the google calendar. I've still got my TalkTalk email on the PC but now I can have the contacts, googlemail and calendar both on my PC and phone without having to mess about syncing.
Sorry this is a long introduction, but I thought it might help others who "nearly got there" with the syncing, only to fail with the 2-way sync like I did. Thanks to other posters for the help, that's why Im posting this!
