Twitter hype???

Okay, I am looking for some help here. I don't get all the hype over Twitter. I understand that it is probably just me, but I don't really give a crap what Oprah is thinking about or doing, or what Martha Stewart made for lunch.

What are the benefits of Twitter that I am missing? I see it on a lot of the screen shots in the layout thread so I must be missing something. What twits make the "Must know now" list that Inc owners subscribe to?

I do recall a while ago that in a study they found that most people quit following twits after about 90 days, the excitement having worn off.

I don't get it either. Anyone who needs to notify everyone what they are doing and where they are has one hell of an ego and should not be encouraged with "followers". Anyone who reads what other people are doing and where they are is just an idiot.

Get out and live your own lives guys.
I will agree with you to a certain extent. I personally use my Twitter alot but as a way for myself to keep a nice little timeline of what I've been doing. I also only add my personal friends so that those are the ONLY people I keep track with. In that sense, if they are doing something that I've done, I'll ask them something like "Hey how was it? I was there last year" or something. Or if they are asking people a question, I'd be inclined to answer it. Its just a good way to interact with people and to keep with a better connection with your friends. Now for the people that want to read what Martha Stewart or Oprah are doing, I cannot comment for them.:)

Edit: Hmm, I have no clue why this thread got moved out of the Incredible (and to Computers nonetheless..??). I will see if I can get this moved back through the mods. Give me a sec.

I'm a twitter addict! I also want a career in social media network marketing. I thought twitter was stupid when I first joined probably because I had no followers, lol.
I'm a beauty blogger and alot of people that I met via blogging are on twitter and we post sales, random quotes etc. It's a great way to keep in touch w/ friends.
My dad 'didn't get twitter either, he doesn't use it to 'microblog', he follows news & tech blogs.

I remember first hearing about Twitter and thinking it sounded like a stupid idea. It wasn't until one day I realized how Twitter could benefit me. I am a news whore. I am obsessed with keeping up on the latest gadgets, phones (android mostly), applications, programs, local news and world news. I love staying in the loop of information. As Twitter started gaining users, I started noticing all of the websites I normally visit have their own Twitter accounts.

One day I finally took the plunge, and created an account, and started adding all of these web sites, and influential people in the tech, sports, and political industries or segments. Now I realize what I had been missing. What I basically have is something like an RSS feed of info going straight to my phone. Tweets can have links in them, so for example, when I get a tweet telling me that a new pic has surfaced of the Droid X coming to Verizon, there is a link right there I can tap and go straight to the website to see it. I do this all the time with all of the websites I follow, and I am now obsessed.

I do not however tweet anything myself, nor do I follow anyone I know. I would consider myself a different type of Twitter user than your stereotypical one most think of. My tweets are bits of news that I receive instantly, faster than if I was just browsing the net.

Please do not discredit Twitter. It has its uses, and I have found that it is people who have never used it are always the ones to put it down, but don't truely understand how it works, and the different ways to implement it into your life.

On a last note, my roomate made fun of me for months because I was using Twitter. Finally one day he sat down next to me while I was checking my feed, and started asking me about it. I showed him how I was following one of the developers of a game I was cuurrently playing, and they just announced their would be new downloadable content in the next day or so. He was pumped because he played the same game, but wouldn't have even known about it because he isn't as much in the loop as I am. He is now just as addicted to his Twitter feed as I am, and is adding new sites and people to follow each day.

Sorry for the long post, I just want to show others out there Twitter is not just for socialites and preteens. It is a great source of quick information, and every one should at least try it before bashing it. :D

PS:
For anyone that is curious here is my Twitter Profile. If you look at the right side you will see all the accounts I follow. Feel free to add me if you have Twitter, but I won't be hurt if you don't because, as I said, I don't tweet often and mostly just read what others have written!

The only thing I use it for is following certain web sites so I can get a quick RSS of sorts.

But yeah...

If you don't like/want twitter, just don't get one! It's really simple and easy to do that after all.

Otherwise I love it. All my friends are on it and I follow a bunch of news sites and blogs. I get all of this on my twitter timeline and sometimes it's stuff I may not have found out otherwise.

Also, because I am a news junkie, I love getting info on what's happening around the world before the news networks even get it up on their sites.

Like others have mentioned, Twitter is the fastest and easiest way to get breaking news. Better than RSS.

I follow a bunch of sports reporters, and they always break news on Twitter first. They don't have to wait to make a blog post or wait for editors to clear their report first (like on ESPN).

I also follow a bunch of news sources, like CNN. Also Several musicians so I get to know when they release new material, tour dates, etc.

Also some shopping/deal sites like dealsplus and woot.

But if you 'hate' it without giving it a chance, then there's probably no point anyways.

This.

Definitely understandable that some ppl hate twitter. But having that feeling w/o giving the service (or any service or device for that matter) a fair and unbiased try , somewhat shows the persons' reluctance to experiment (their loss).

As for being a fad, my city is definitely taking advantage on the service (@NYCTSubwayScoop, @NotifyNYC) and informs me about transit changes and emergency situations. Post 9/11 warrants real-time news and updates; twitter imo fits the bill.
