Official GSM Hero 2.1 Thread

Which is what mine is post OTA from the other day.

It looks like this is just a downloadable 1.5 ROM patched with the preliminary update.

Again, no it is not. After the upgrade, my phone requested the preliminary update over the air again.

My theory is that HTC has found a problem with the Nordic version and the new 2.1 upgrade and have been forced to release a new version of Android 1.5. Why else would thay make an effort to release a new firmware with android 1.5 just before the 2.1.
Wish they could explain what this is all about.

Luckily I made a proper backup, so getting my settings back will be easy.

Not being funny, but may I ask, unless you're in the targeted area, why would you be flashing your phone with this ROM anyway

It seems odd if none of us are sure what exactly it is that people are diving in heard first and running it.

But I am. I'm Norwegian and I live in Norway and I have a Norwegian Hero and I downloaded the update from the Norwegian HTC support site.
Anyway, I did suspect that this was not 2.1 when I saw the version numbers, so it was a calculated risk. I'm not complaining about having to reload data into my phone, but I do wish that HTC would tell us what this "update" does.

Anyway, still suspect that HTC has found some problem with certain country specific versions and rolled out an updated Android 1.5 before eclair comes

OK, sorry I apologise then, I wasn't having a go or anything :)

No worries, never thought you were, it was a sensible question. Would expect HTC to announce 2.1 with big letters.

I'm mainly posting (and clarifying) for the benefit of other readers. There is no point in doing this update now. Better to wait and see if the Android 2.1 eclair FOTA update actually requires it and then install this one only if you have to. Saves you wiping you phone one time to many.

If this update was NOT required to update to 2.1 why would HTC release it ?

The reason they release this is because of some bug that prevent the 2.1 update as far as i have read and this makes perfect sense.

If this update is not required then it makes NO sense to release it now so (hopefully) close to the 2.1 update.

Especially when seeing that even obvious errors have not been fixed (Danish Language selected gives "problem loading widget" on top of the menu screen f.ex)

I bet they took the old rom and only patched the part needing to be fixed for the 2.1 update.

if you do the FOTA update then it does not wipe anything at all.

I agree, this is the only reason I can imagine. However, given the choice I would have waited. The second FOTA (eclair) will erase your phone. This was warned when I got the first FOTA. It told my to do a backup before the next one.
Where did you read about this last update fixing some bug. I have searched quite extensively and found no official comments what so ever about what this last update does.

Then surely if this is the case they will have to release this "update" OTA then? Otherwise a lot of people are going to be left in limbo.

Just checked my Build no- it is 2.73.61.66. Htc website says FOTA update for HERO with ROM version 2.73.405.5 which is the older version before HTC released an update in Feb 2010, i.e 2.73.61.66. I am confused now, do I need to get back to the older ROM version i.e, 2.73.405.5??????????

I was wondering the same. 2.73.61.66 is latest version for Orange UK. May explain why Orange UK seem to behind, do we even need this update? Would the 2.1 update work anyway without the preparatory one if it's only to fix an older build?

You can't actually install 2.73.405.5 on your phone as that is the vanilla version. Yours is the most updated orange one, and I have had it in writing from them that all versions will be updated, not just the 405's. We now just have to wait for orange to hurry up and push it out!

The UK support page has been slightly updated:

Well spotted sir.

So that just goes to show that they know EXACTLY what is going on and what needs to happen.

It's a shame they haven't used their Facebook/Twitter updates to communicate with their hardcore customers. Joe bloggs won't have a clue about all the hysteria we buy into!

"Hey guys, this is happening and this is why..."

It would have saved their customer service agents a LOT of time.

I have UK TMobile G2 Touch non-rooted, and I put the date forward and got the pop-up to update the firmware. After download the phone tries to install update, but then I get the phone and exclamation triangle and the only way to get out of it is to take the battery out...

Anyone else with get this?

It can take a while to update. I certainly wouldn't recommend taking the battery out unless it's been running for over 30 minutes. Most take about 5 but mine took around 15.

I can confirm this. Mine took ages, more than 15 minutes. After waiting for 15 min I finally left it, believing the update had failed, and did something else for about half an hour. When I got back it had rebooted and was asking for the pin.

Which has been my main bugbear all along.

Most of us are reasonable, understanding, people and had they kept us in the loop with the occasional (no one is talking daily or even weekly) post I think we'd have all felt a little more assured.

Sadly they prefer to use these outlets mainly to spout endless corporate guff.

HTC have confirmed that there is a requirement to have the Hero at a specific state.

It seems that some users haven't even applied the update from September 09 which has been interfering with the some of the OTA updates.

Picked this up from the Netherlands:

Google Translate

That's what I was thinking. I didn't do the September (which shows version 2.73.405.5 now) one and it currently won't accept my serial number, so I'm thinking of running the Feb 10 one (which shows 2.73.61.66) first.
