When Wifi is on I got longer battery usage

I decided to do a little test with my Evo. Yesterday my battery drained out in 3 hrs at work with the Wifi off. Today I turned on my wifi at work and I got 7 hrs before recharging the battery. Weird I thought if Wifi is on it would drain the battery faster.

What else do you have on? 3 hours is ridiculous. even 7 is pretty ridiculous with medium to heavy usage... I get 14 hours on my heavy use days

Pretty much just Pandora on from start of work till end. I also have gmail sync every 10 min (need it sync cause of work). I also have Facebook sync every 2 hrs. RSS news feeds syncs every 2 hrs. I use lots of sms and talk. Phone calls on and off for the day. Once a day I use fring for about 20 min. Today I did the same thing with my Wifi on and I got a lot more hrs with my battery.

Just a question....

If you are at work, why would you need your phone to sync your email?

I get better battery with Wifi in my house because I only get about one bar of 3G in my house. It may be a different story if I got full 3G.

As do I...and I get full bars of 3G at the office. Wifi definitely uses less power. Surfing at work on 3G uses much more battery. I haven't turned off wifi in over a week, whether I'm near it or not and get fine battery life. GPS is always on too, but if something isn't using it draws little to no power.

Well that makes perfect sense. WIFI uses less power than 3G and since you are streaming data all day at work, it should last longer with WIFI.

It has been well known for a while now that it is good to leave WIFI on. I never turn mine off and get 10-20 hours depending on usage.

If you are anywhere near a wifi hotspot, ALWAYS use wifi. Wifi uses much, much less power than the 3G modem, period.

TITCR, this is the credited response.

Regardless of the 3G reception, Wifi will ALWAYS consume less power than 3G. The only reason to ever turn wifi off is if you know you'll be spending the whole day away from home and away from any wifi sources, then you'll save a marginal amount of power for the wifi antenna searching for hotspots, but otherwise one should leave it on if they will be in an out of wifi zones.

This is the problem with everyone just telling people to turn off wifi or 3G to save battery. It doesn't spread any knowledge, only actions. Weak/no signals drain the battery more than anything you could do with your phone, more than 3D games, more than recording 720p video. If you are using wifi with a strong signal, then 3G won't even be in use (no need to disable it).

Strong signals = good battery life. Weak/no signals = bad battery life. Sure, you can turn off all the radios and have good battery life, but you certainly don't need to. Of the radios, 4G drains the battery the most, then GPS, then 3G, then wifi. If you can, use whatever has a strong signal for best battery life. Turn off the radios when you know there isn't a good signal.
