You say HTC Sync is not installed....did you have it installed and then uninstalled it or have you never had it installed? When you install it, it adds the Sync program itself and a set of HTC USB drivers (different to the HBOOT drivers). You uninstall the Sync programme but leave the drivers on your PC.
That's the most likely reason why your PC doesn't detect your phone. If that doesn't help, post your question in THIS TOPIC and someone will be able to help
