Official GSM Hero 2.1 Thread

Hi there chaps

had been eagerly awaiting the 2.1 update like everyone else. Got it today on my unbranded orange phone. downloaded quickly enough for such a large file. however when came to install it stopped halfway through, rebooted as 1.5 and then told me that i needed 25mb on phone memory to install and i had only 19mb.... did a bit of deleting then resumed the download

Looks very nice and is faster then the 1.5, however there is still sometimes a lag with it, i'm assuming that is due to the first boot, what have others found?

Loved the fact that it didnt wipe the phone, well done HTC on that front, however disappointed that there doesnt seem to be apps2sd which would help free up phone memory which as we know on the hero is limited.

On the whole pleased but still playing around with it so i guess only time will tell

I don't think anyone was really expecting HTC to backport apps2sd to 2.1. :)

Yes, I agree - the new Hero feels much faster, especially after waking up from long standby. It still has lag here and there, but much less than on 1.5. So far, I'm quite happy with it, with one disappointment - I can't seem to figure out how to enable Bluetooth file transfer - Hero doesn't seem to provide file transfer BT service.

My BT file transfer works fine. Tried it both ways, although admitedly only with a pic file.
Settings> Wireless& Networks> Bluetooth Settings> Turn on > etc... to receive.
To send a pic,
Settings> Wireless& Networks> Bluetooth Settings> Turn on >[Go to your pic file folder] > Share> Via Bluetooth > [select file] > Send

SHOULD work roughly the same with any file?????

According to Pocket Lint Everyone should have it by the end of the month.

HTC has confirmed to Pocket-lint that the rollout has started on Monday 28 June with operator specific handset models (that's Orange and T-Mobile) in the UK also rolling out their updates before the end of the month, just 2 days away at the time of writing.

I'll believe it when i see it. An impatient Orange user ;-)

Fingers crossed for branded users.

My personal favourites so far are:
Sky News App (only available on 2.1),
Animated weather
Power Control Widget (that brightness button is ace!)
New look YouTube
Proper Twitter App

Never mind Google Navigation, Goggles, 'New' Market and a bit of a performance boost!

At least it's all been worth the wait. Can you imagine if it wasn't?!

Oddly though, I can't get my Last.fm app to work. (Communication error).

Guys, today's the day :D I just clicked the check for updates button on my hero... and it's here :D IT HAS FINALLY ARRIVEEEEEEEEEEEDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD!!!

Gonna do the update, will be back in a few as soon as it finishes to comment. But first, I'm gonna backup my SD card. You never know :D :D

EDIT: okay, here's my experience. The download and update go relatively fast. First boot takes some time, and immediately after the input of the PIN code I was greeted with a force close :D nevermind, entered my pin again and it started loading, counting percents until it reached 100. If you have Astrid installed and some overdue tasks in it, your phone will buzz and make noise to remind you about that (don't be alarmed :D ).

After that and some time, it loaded. My oh my. Never ever have homescreen changes been so snappy and smooth! Pinch-selection of homescreens works fast and snappy. Of course, the homescreens are reset and you have to set them up all over again, but so far it works great!

Oh, and mad props to HTC for not wiping the phone completely :D all apps and messages saved :) Off I go to investigate it!

Hey guys, just found this thread.

I'm on branded Orange Hero but as other people on here have noted I've yet to get the prep update, and obviously not 2.1 yet.

Are we to assume it was included in the ROM upgrade we had a while ago? Other wise, what are we doing wrong? The lack of communication from HTC or Orange is a bit silly to be honest.

Edit: Just to be clear, I'm currently on 2.73.61.66, while the post on HTC's website say I need 2.73.405.5 for the update.

Can't wait for 2.1, especially after a wait that has been, frankly, insane.
