It does take a long time. That's why when I'm at the house I out my iPhone on wifi and keep the captivate on the charger or just leave it for phone call/text messages.
I did a live chat with samsung support because I was worried about my battery life. The level 1 tech told me that the battery needs to charge for at least 4 hours. I have found that my battery is consistently taking around 4 hours to charge, so at least for me, the tech was right.
Mine will take a few hours. I'm going to be going on my 3rd full discharge and I hope the battery gets better from here. I've hardly used my phone at all today and I'm down to 10%. Phone has been off the charger for 16 hours. My iPhone 3g would last atleast a day and a half.
Have you tried to power cycle the battery? let it drain then charge it do this 3 times. I did it when I got my phone 2 weeks ago, and it worked great. My phone hasnt touched the charger in about 12 hours. and its still at 48% I have made phone calls and sent text msg's and been on and off of facebook all day.
A full charge would take 4-5 hours. On my Iphone, I would only keep it plugged in for an hour or two. The only thing, on the Iphone, it showed a full battery, but it might not have been full. Atleast the Captivate tells you when its a full charge.

I have done the discharging/recharging about 5 times now this week and I haven't seen that kinda of battery life. Are there any other apps that you're running to help limit the useage?
When my phone is completely dead, it takes ~3 hours to charge with phone off. I haven't timed it since I was able to get a full day's worth of battery though
mine took 3.4hrs to charge from a full discharge. my battery life sucked until I did 1full discharge/recharge cycle. Today is after the second full discharge/recharge and already battery life is looking shitty again. I suspect that there are bad batteries out there as well as bad GPS in just about all craptivates. My personal plan is to exchange this one and see what the next one brings and return it permanently if there is no GPS fix before my 30days are up.
Yeah it should take about 3hrs and 25 mins to charge it from being fully discharged. So far my phone has lasted about 32hrs with little to no use after being fully charged before hitting 10%.

Im not running any special battery preservation apps. My wifi is always on, I have the live wallpaper going. Maybe I just got lucky and got a really good battery. I don't really know.
Guys the wall charger for Captivate is 700 mamp. You can try (on your own risk) to charge with a 1000 mamp charger, it will be quicker. But the batt life will suffer.

Mine takes a little under 4 hours from a full discharge. I power cycled the phone for the first full week that I had it (prob 5 cycles or so) and I can say that the battery life is much improved. Yesterday morning I unplugged at 7am and at midnight when I plugged it back in it was only down to 49%. That was with moderate use - a few calls, texts, downloaded a couple of apps, some web surfing.
Also on chargers - I have 2 1Amp USB chargers - one from Griffin and the Apple one that came with my 3G. I've used both to charge my phone hoping for faster charge times but the difference was negligible. The Griffin works great and is a really nice unit with 2 1A USB ports. The Apple though made the phone really hot for some reason so I'm prob not going to use that one again.
