On the Fence: Why Root My Eris?

Have spent the morning reading, rooting - and flashing to KaosFroyov24.

I couldn't get it to automatically boot into the custom recovery - so I just pick "recovery" from the stock HBoot. If it makes any difference - my Hboot version is 1.47.

I'm going to see if I remove the stock music app will disable the "auto-launch" when the phone connects to Ford Sync over bluetooth. *fingers crossed*

reading this topic has made me decide to root my Eris.

although now i don't know what to do, there's so many tutorials everyone
has suggested, and many ROMs to flash the phone with, i don't know which
of those to do. what really sounded like something i want is to have the
overclock, but underclock when screen off feature. any suggestions?
edit: i went with the one-click root tutorial. and the ROM i chose to
go with was xtrROM3.0.3, and i installed SetCPU to have overclock
and underclock settings.

edit: i just noticed the sticky about losing 3G, should i hold off from
rooting then?
edit: the above edit was apparently a rumor, rooted myphone and
i still have my 3G.

I have a freshly-rooted Eris running White Widow 4.6, and I still have my 3g. Rooting really -is- easy, and it is completely worth your time. There are even ways to do it so that you can completely avoid the command line (if that's something you're uncomfortable with).
My phone is faster, more energy-efficient, and doesn't run nearly as hot as it did pre-root. I'd not go back to stock (and the hellacious sense UI with its nasty apps) again.

Good luck!

i was reading through the tutorial that's stickied,
and that mentions a restore, which is what the
loss of 3g topic is saying to avoid. so which tutorial
could i use to avoid doing a restore?

I haven't seen anyone who's actually lost their 3g, I certainly didnt'. You'll only need to "restore" if you want to get back to your original backup (the backup you made from stock install) or any other backups you may have made.

all you should be doing with Eu1's dummies tutorial is a wipe and then a flash from sdcard. 5 minutes later you're up and running

I am considering rooting, but I want to keep my apps. Will I still have access to the market also?

Thanks,
PC49

yes. programs like titanium backup will save apps+settings if you're root.

I'm trying out my firest new ROM flash (xtrROM) + titanium app restore, I'll let you know how it goes (I flashed my first rom only a few days ago, senseable 3.1)

edit: works great. handcent + k9mail + setcpu profiles saved. now I just have to get used to no sense....

lol, now i see that the sticky was a rumor or something like that. so i'm
going to try the stickied tutorial later today.

in this topic, i've seen mentioned White Widow, Evil Eris, xtrROM, KaosFroyo.
i just want something that's stable, and i would like to install SetCPU (i'm
guessing it's an app).

edit: i also have the official 2.1, does that matter? are there any models or
something that have to go through extra precaution, kinda like setting up
CFW on a PSP?

edit2: just read through the dummies tutorial, and i'm probably going to
use that tutorial instead. the only thing that confused me was in the setup
part, it suggested Plain_Jane, and i was reading through how to install it,
and it's different that what the dummies tutorial explained. would i use the
dummy steps to install the flash?

edit3: this is what happens when i'm at work reading around forums, i
found another guide here. that i'll most likely use now.

edit4: my results of rooting: used the one-click tutorial for the start
of the process, then used the dummies guide for the actual root
installation part.
i did lose my apps from pre-rooting, but it wasn't
difficult to just go download them all again.
i decided to go with
xtrROM3.0.3 just because of peoples' opinions. so far, i like it. i also
installed SetCPU and have a 710/245 ondemand setting, with a
245/245 screen off profile. i also downloaded Wireless Tether, but i
haven't messed around with it yet.

Just get the device rooted first. Worry about the ROM later. When I had an Eris, I messed with KaosFroyo and it gave me the best results of all the other ROMs. I didn't have a separate kernel, though. I just used whatever came with the ROM. OC to about 740 or so, and it was decent. The other ROMs were just crap, in my opinion. Just Kaos and CyanogenMod ROMs are the way to go.

so i just followed the Universal 1-click method, and now i have root. i lost
all my apps though. i thought i read somewhere in this topic that apps
would stay. oh well though.

is there a way to tell which rooted ROM i'm running from within it? the guide
said i installed rootme.zip. and where would i find SetCPU?

also, is there a ROM that has a built in SetCPU-like function, and wi-fi tethering?
i read somewhere that one existed, but i can't find where i read that.

edit: from my understanding, every time you want to try a different ROM,
you have to wipe/restore the phone, so i would lose all my apps every single
time? unless i assume the app2sd gets around this?

If you want to flash a different ROM, it's best to wipe the phone - both dalvik cache and system data. However, as long as you do a NAND backup BEFORE you wipe the phone you will not lose your apps and their associated entirely. The NAND backup is essentially an image of the phone as it was before the wipe and the apps will still be in that image. However, there is a catch. If you had a ROM installed that DID NOT use apps2sd, you will have to reinstall your apps in the new ROM. The smart thing to do is download Titanium Backup and backup all your apps BEFORE wiping. Then with the new ROM in place download Titanium Backup and use it to restore your apps and their associated data. This applies notably to "user" apps. With the exception of SMS/MMS, I leave system apps alone so as not to mess with the contents of the ROM. If you had a ROM that DID make use of apps2sd, you should not have to reinstall any apps as long as the next ROM you load also uses apps2sd and the same ext partition type (some I have seen use ext2 and others require ext3).

A note about Titanium Backup. There is both a paid and a free version. The big difference is if you use the free version you have to push the install button for each app reinstalled. With the paid version you don't have to do this and once you tell it to run the batch operation, the installs take place automatically (essentially).

i did backup before i rooted.

so would i restore that backup, download Titanium Backup and use it,
then install the ROM of my choice and download Titanium Backup again
to restore my apps?

edit: since i made a backup of my non-root, if i restore that image,
would that be un-rooting my phone?
edit: restoring my un-rooted nand backup did NOT un-root the
phone, but Titanium Backup wouldn't work because my phone
at this point was considered not rooted.

What backup did you do before rooting? A nand backup is only possible after rooting, so if you mean you did a nand backup from the recovery menu immediately after initiating the one-click process, then yes you can restore that, then download TiBackup.

Got and used a Droid Eris for the first time yesterday. Rooted it by midnight that night, tethered my EeePC today.

It's so easy a caveman can do it. Doesn't change any settings. Just make sure you follow the REALLY simple root app. Open the app, reboot, choose rom from SD, reboot, done.

P.S. It's my first post on Android Forums :D

Welcome to the forums! And congratulations on your rooted phone! It's been about three weeks since I've rooted. Ever since, I have learned so much about this phone and what it can do.

Everyone always say this, but rooting your phone really does make it fun to own an Eris! Let the fun continue...

Do you know how to move a slider?

Also, realize that you shouldn't move it TOO high, or else your phone will freeze. The "safe zone" for overclock is 710Mhz, but some can go higher.

I just rooted my eris and installed froyo 2.2 v24. I dont have the setPC to set the overclock in my programs. Also, the camera app is black. It will take a picture, but i cant see what im taking a picture (or video) of. Any suggestions?

I just wanted to share my thoughts to anyone who is on the fence about rooting. Best decision ever, very easy and painless. I used the universal root process which took about 30 minutes. If you can read and follow directions, you are golden. I've been running White Widow 4.6 for about a week now and love every second of it! Since root I have ZERO dialer lag, its pretty much a brand new phone now. :) Like all electronic devices nothing is perfect, it still has slight hiccups here and there nothing major. The biggest problem I have with my phone at the moment is putting it down, I love this thing. I hope this helps anyone that is on the fence, you will not regret it.

so i restored my initial nand backup, download Titanium
Backup, and it said i'm not rooted. so would i pretty much
have to just re-download all my apps all over again?

Do a check for me... open up your app drawer and look for Superuser Permissions. If you don't see it, then you need to flash the rootme.zip that was provided with the root app you installed.
