The only change I had made to Mytracks was to change the one default setting from 5 meters to 1 on both devices. So while the other guy may have done something differently, my test is directly comparable to the Droid I tested with/against.

I just went through all the settings in MyTracks and there is no "snap to road" or anything similar listed.

That's right. Unlike street-navigation apps, My Tracks doesn't know roads from fields, lakes or houses. Those map tiles and/or aerial photography are just raster graphics, with the lat/lon points of the track overlaid.

Also, the 1-meter vs 5-meter precision setting in My Tracks does not affect the accuracy of any given point that is captured, which is entirely determined by the underlying system GPS hardware and software. The setting just controls the density of points captured along the track. At high speeds, it doesn't make much difference, but it does cornering. It makes a significant difference with slow-speed tracks such as walking

Something else caused the other guy's test track actually to be less accurate at the GPS level, while krichek's track was obviously quite good. The only difference I can think of in the environments is that krichek has A-GPS enabled in MS Based mode, while the other guy might have the default of Standalone mode. Something else might be different that we don't know about.

I was thinking about that as I was driving my kids to school after my last post. If I have time tonight (my son has boyscouts) I'll try and load MyTracks onto my wife's Vibrant and take all 3 out for another drive lol.

Her's is still in standalone mode so we should be able to determine if there is a significant difference between standalone and A-GPS as far as accurate positioning goes.

Not to stir up controversey, but remember when a few posters tried to insist their GPS was purrrrrfect, and that by no means did the GPS issue affect all Samsung Galaxy S phones. Some people even did multiple exchanges, thinking they would get a good unit, we all know how that turned out:rolleyes:

Well for those of you who aren't high as a kite, and you have your senses, you know by now that EVERY single Galaxy S indeed has GPS issues, from the Vibrant to Captivate, and even the Galaxy S phones somewhere clear accross the globe.

So a brave At&t customer complained to the FCC, soon after At&t executive services contacted this customer with the following letter. (ps...someone on here is going to say the letter is a fake, I can feel it coming)

"I am a Customer Appeals Manager with the Executive Response team with AT&T and am in receipt of an FCC complaint that we received regarding the problems with the Samsung Captivate GPS. I appreciate the opportunity to respond.

After a review of your case it appears another Customer Appeals Manager Mason Anderson may have already contacted you regarding this issue, however I wanted to provide you with additional details. After speaking with Samsung today, I have been advised that they are currently working on testing the software updates and will be releasing the updates this month, in September. Samsung stated more information will be available in the next week or so on how to download the updates. Samsung stated this is an issue in all of their Galaxy S series phones, and not just the Captivate, which operates on AT&T

Not to stir up controversey...

You? Unthinkable!

Teasing, SamsungVibrant, just teasing. :D

Thanks for the info. I rather like seeing such a firm acknowledgment that the problem is as widespread as it is.

And krichek, I don't think he means to take away from all the fine work you've done regarding the matter. You've been very helpful in making sense of all this GPS absurdity. The fact of the matter is the problem affects us all, though not necessarily to the same degree.

Dear Bovine, as much as I love you, I must admit your screename and avatar scare me to pieces. Diseased Prions, most horrible thing on the face of this planet, extremely horrible, no cure, nothing, they don't even lose their activity if you try and destory them, they are indestructable. Even ashes from diseased prions are contagious.

This is not the place to discuss it, but I know a lot about diseased prions, if anyone is interested you can message me. I've learned about them from the man himself, Noble Prize Winner Stanley Prusiner.

Please let me know if you have any further questions regarding this issue. I do regret any frustrations or inconveniences that you may have experienced regarding this issue.

OMG Sammy you really have a flair for drama and you must be stricken with one serious case of CRS or have problems with reading comprehension or maybe you ARE trying to stir up more controversy.

Yes, my GPS works - not perfectly, it is occasionally slow to lock up but it will get me from point A to point B whenever I use it and it will pinpoint my location on Google Maps satellite view.

Furthermore, the way I read that form letter is that this is a problem that affects all of their Galaxy S Series (Captivate, Fascinate, Vibrant, etc) not necessarily every phone within that series. And even if the form letter did emphatically state, that every Galaxy S ever made has the identical GPS problem and none work, how would you explain mine, kricheck's, spiz's, perpetual's, Robinelli's, etc etc. and countless more who don't post. But it doesn't say that each UNIT is so affected, it says that the problem is across all SERIES of Galaxy S. It's just some corporate ass covering. All they are really saying is that "yes, we acknowledge the problem exists, it is universal to Galaxy S Series not just AT&T, and we are fixing it."

Yet you post in giant type with red lettering, like you found the Holy Grail that proves you were right all along. LOL.

So rather than try to discredit those of us (and there are at least half a dozen who have so posted) who have working GPS why don't you just trust that maybe this problem doesn't affect each unit to the same degree. And why would you not believe your fellow Vibrant users over a corporate form letter. Why would we lie?

Anyway, Sammy the fix is coming. What happened to your earlier post and letting this thread rest until it gets here?

Robo21 I'm sorry, but your phone, and everyone elses, no matter what you say, has sub par GPS. There is not 1 person alive who owns a vibrant with the orignal ROM, with a perfectly working GPS. Flat out, not 1 person alive.
Anyone who says so, is not to be believed or is mistaken because they might have use wireless networks turned on, or some other reason that misleads them into thinking their GPS is optimal.

I would ask that Samsung and T-mobile do not provide people who claim their GPS is great with the GPS optimization. You don't need it.

Actually, why don't you not install the GPS optimization since your GPS gets you from point A to point B, as you have stated many times.

Please, don't install it. Actually, call T-mobile right now, ask them to note your account, asking them to not send you the update.

Sammy, reread my posts.... I never stated my GPS was "perfect" anyone can see that. All I ever stated was that it worked well enough to get me from point A to point B and sometimes was slow to lock up. Would I like to fix the slow lockup that occurs from time to time? You betcha.

My point is that not all Vibrants are affected to the same degree apparently.

I am by no means liar, and i am not using wireless networks. I am on the stock rom with no lag fix. My gps will find me within 8 - 15 meters everytime within 10 - 20 seconds.

Waaah, you must be lying, your GPS can't be better than mine!

This is exactly what I'm talking about. Unit to unit variation. Who knows what variables are at play?

Standalone, getting 8-15 meters? I haven't seen it that good, though that's not an indictment of what you say. You may have mentioned it before, but how many sats can you lock on to?

do you have "use wireless networks" on or off? also are you getting 5 sats in use all the time, or just certain hours in the day. some people like myself get better gps performance at night. but during the day, the gps is dead.

Much much earlier in this thread, before I realized there was a "dead time" where my GPS was not functional, I posted several screen shots where I would get locks on upwards of 7 sats with the original rom, while in standalone mode and with "use wireless networks" disabled. I would also get accuracies in the range of 12-17 feet routinely.

I remember. This is one weird glitch. Everyone seems to manifest a little differently.

Man I will be glad when the fix arrives this is getting old.

i have networks off. just gps

hey ghost, I can replicate those results at night also, what about during the day. try using your gps during the day, then post a picture, I would like to see if you get 4 sats in use.

will you post a day shot tomorrow please.

ps...i'm being serious, i'm curious if you get those results during the day. During the day my GPS is dead, then like a miracle comes alive at night.

by the way... 4 sats in use is the absolute minimum required to get true 3D, x,y,z,t.

He would need to check about 3 times tomorrow spread over the course of the entire day. I'm no longer tracking when my dead time is (as I don't have one with the new rom) but for me, outside of my dead time (which lasted about 3 and a half hours) my gps was always at least useable.
