Help Droid Poor Call Quality

Since buying the Droid I've had issues with my call quality. People that I talk to complain that I sound muffled. I took it to Verizon a couple of weeks ago and they did a *2 something and it worked. Now it is muffled again.
I was hoping the update would fix this issue, but it did not. (2.0.1)

The problem is, I do not call myself very often ;), so I do not know it is happening until someone keeps telling me to speak up.

Call Quality should be the a given on a telephone. You think!

I'm having the exact same problem. With mine, I get a LOT of echo issues on the other end. Whoever I am talking to complains about repeated echos. I tried altering some voice privacy setting and dialing *228 ?? and it didn't help. I saw the update was supposed to fix the echo issue, so we'll see as I just downloaded it this morning.

Also, another big problem I have is when I try to talk in bed. At night, when I'm laying down I talk a lot. I came from ATT and had no problems. Now with my Droid, people tell me they can't hear me when I'm laying down. I actually have to set up for the phone not to be distorted. Anyone seen that?

I get serious echo issues with speaker phone and the people on the other end say i sound muffled if not on speaker phone :(

Have you tried turning speaker phone on and then off again to see if it improves the sound? I know that is not something that should be a permanent fix but I have seen that mentioned on this board. If it does work, it might isolate what the problem is for a more permanent fix.

Long time reader, first time poster...

I purchased my droid the first day and was totally in love with it. Unfortunately, my girlfriend was not as impressed as I was. She used to complain (frequently! :() about my voice sounding muffled on the phone. I was desperate to find a solution and I found it in the thread below. I changed the vocode setting to EVRC-B and she immediately noticed the difference in voice quality. She has not made any negative comments about voice quality in weeks!

I would suggest reading the entire thread so that you are aware of the potential implications associated with changing the vocode settings.

Good luck!

You know, it could be the OTHER person's phone. Just because you sound muffled to the person you're calling, doesn't mean that your phone is at fault. And just because they hear echoes doesn't mean that your phone is causing it. I think we might be too quick to blame the DROID for the problems the people who are receiving calls are saying.

Some people are fanboys of networks...it's just not iPhone users. Verizon may have (by far) the largest data network in the U.S., but their call quality has never been the greatest. It varies so much between areas that it's not something you can really measure as a network whole.

My area has always had pathetic Verizon call quality. I used to notice that the people I called who had Verizon sounded awful, anyone else sounded fine. Now that I'm on Verizon, I've noticed that the people I call who are on Verizon sound just fine, but everybody on another network says I sound awful compared to my Razr2 on Tmobile.

It's a tradeoff...I use the internet more in one day on my phone that I do on phone calls all month...and Verizon is the ONLY network I can get 3g (or any usable mobile internet service) in my area.

I do not want to go into the phone and change that setting. And as for the other person's phone. My girlfriend is using the LG Dare. And on my previous droid there was no problem. Also, on my blackberry there was no problem. This is why I think the problem is the droid's mic

What you're saying is "I don't want to use a known solution, I don't want to fix my phone".

It's stupid easy to change the setting. It took me 30 seconds. If you don't want to try it, then your right to complain ends here.

I have tried everything mentioned here and more. I know it is not the other persons phone because I can call my office and home voice mail and listen to it.
It is a hardware problem of the phone.

The only thing that seems to fix it for me was doing the *228 thing.

That works every time but does not last.

I have been told by several posters that it should not do anything to solve the problem.

I just want a permanent solution.

I am really frustrated. I have struggled with 3 different Droids and Verizon is sending me a FOURTH! everyone I call tells me I sound muffled or that I am talking from inside a box. Inbound call quality is superb, as is the speaker in the unit (listening to Pandora, calls, etc.)

I have performed every one of the tips & tricks listed on various forums to see if I can improve the outbound call quality, but nothing has worked satisfactorily. I have found that the best results are with a BT headset. Second would be speakerphone/handsfree mode. But handset-to-ear mode is absolutely the worst.

If you check this forum; https://supportforums.motorola.com/thread/16215?start=450&tstart=0, you'll see that over 52,000 people have viewed the thread discussing the poor outbound call quality. I really hope Verizon/Google/Motorola figure this out.

I hope after this fourth one you see the writing on the wall and call it quits with this phone. Can you call someone with skype and have them record it so we can hear this?

It does no good for us to hear you have sound problems we can't hear.

odd thing happened this morning... after being upset last night about the quality of the phone i was gettin someone stopped by and we did a test by switching phones and both talking into eachothers and such.. for some reason it doesn't sound like anythings wrong. i mean it's not 100% perfect but i didn't expect that, but for all purposes, it was very clear.

i dont know what could have caused this change overnight except maybe i had just gotten the phone and by using it for a bit and powering down and back up once it had gotten fixed? or maybe, it was the -1 temps we had here in chicago last night that caused the phone to get cold while outside and when i talked on it in my car it sounded different because of the extreme cold. either way, im happy with the sound quality now but verizon did tell me if i ran into anything like this problem to bring it in and swap it, so i am going to call them and ask them what i should do. just to be safe i may swap it once and then i can finally get down to customizing the phone :)

No. I think there is too much subjectivity (as I see many others who post that they have no issues at all, and yet others who claim it is mild to moderate ) and too many uncontrollable variables in trying a recording via Skype. Many posts on other forums indicate that users realize the outbound sound is problematic, but that they like the other features on the phone too much to relinquish it. I and many other posters to "poor quality" threads in the forums, intended to use the phone for business where we are (were) heavy voice call users.

My intent in posting on this forum was as a cautionary note that the Droid, on Verizon, so far (2 months and 3 units later) has been ineffective for making calls. And that those who might choose the phone ought to be wary with respect to this aspect of the phone's performance. Certainly this is my opinion, but if I had waited to purchase the phone a month later than I did, and saw all the messages and threads relating to the poor call quality, I would have paused and tested the phone more vigorously in the Verizon store before purchasing it.

I am new to "smartphones" ( i have used many cell phones for many years, most recently a Blackberry 8800 series) but I expected much better call quality based on my past experiences.
