Accessories Samsung Captivate Dock

I was really thinking about getting this, but I downloaded the dock app from the market and tested it first and it is deeply flawed. I am not going to bother until the app works decently, or maybe I will write my own.

Interestingly, the Samsung app doesn't even use the standard desktop dock mode so I don't even know if it will auto-launch when you dock it. Even if it does, it pretty much sucks.

No cable included for that price?

Lol nope, reminds me of Apple, charge a TON and you dont get any cables for it. Check this site, it has the same dock, but supposidly comes with a cord and wall plug, for 15 bucks less.

Multimedia Station with travel charger also synchronizes with your PC via optional USB cable Video output to your TV via optional RCA cable

So it comes with a power cord but no USB or RCA cable. I don't care about the RCA cable, and I have an extra USB - but I bought one anyways, as it says this is the genuine cable, the one I purchased to have as a spare was cheap, and looks it.

I just received the Samsung Desk Dock - it appears to be a high quality piece and it does include the charger/cable assembly that plugs into the back of the dock. It also includes a speaker jack for external speakers or headphone, but that feature will not work until we have Froyo 2.2.

It launches the Samsung Desk Home app when the phone is placed in the dock, which incidentally, works quite well on my phone. Another option is to download the Alarm Clock Plus V2 app which also works well.

Now, if they'll just launch the auto mount and provide Froyo (hopefully with improved GPS performance) I'll be a happy camper. :)

The alignment of the dock connector to the phone is quite precise due to it's small size - the thickness of a case would change this alignment and not allow the connector to align with the phone - so, no - a case will not work with the Samsung Desk Dock.

I was concerned that this critical alignment might make it difficult to place the phone in the dock, but not so - Samsung did a good job with this and the phone docks quite easily.

For whatever reason mine has stopped the incessant refreshing. I have no idea why it started, or now stopped - and I'm afraid to touch it in the dock lest it start it up again! I do like the Dock Home app, it's got a nice calendar and time display.

ETA Well, I shouldn't have said anything, because it's back to 'Please wait....Loading' constantly again. Does anyone know why Dock Home does this? It didn't at first. Very distracting!

Mine does the same thing - it's "reloading" way to often. I have the refresh for the weather info set for every three hours, so it's not weather updating causing it.

That's why I downloaded Alarm Clock Plus V2. It's much more basic than the Samsung Desk Home app, but it doesn't do the reloading constantly.

I'd prefer the Samsung app, but without the reloading BS constantly - anyone know why it's doing this?

I've sent a note to the development team, I'll let you know if I hear anything back (no doubt there's a snowball's chance, but we'll see).

Will it work with an full body invisibleshield on it?

I don't use the invisibleshield, but ANY added material to the phone would probably not allow the power connector to seat into the phone without stressing the connector on the dock. Refer to my post #14 above. A full body shield will space the phone higher and farther away from the desk dock. The tolerances on these small connectors are very tight as opposed to the slop that can exist in larger connectors. Putting more tension on the connector interface because of the body shield will wear those components quicker, promote slop and eventual failure.

Samsung went the extra measure of permanently affixing the male connector into the dock permanently, with proper alignment, and thus the power plug sent with the unit attaches to the rear of the dock - NOT through the dock directly into the phone. Samsung must have thought this interface critical for longevity and reliability.

Well, you can see the results of my attempts to get any info on the dock app here. Basically it's broken and good luck letting anyone know.

Apparently Samsung has their ENTIRE software programming department (that would be 2 people) working on getting the Froyo release out so they can start working on the Gingerbread bugs . . . they just don't have anyone but the janitor (he's a part-time programmer) to maintain the Samsung applications.

As stated previously this dock is manufactured quite well. Even the packaging was sexy. The connector doesn't take much to slide into place on the phone. I use the body glove case, and it adds a small amount of bulk. Therefore the phone has to be naked.

I haven't had the loading problems. On launch of the home dock, it updates for maybe 15 seconds and then is fine.

Regardless, the desktop dock is awesome. I'm getting another for home, as I intend to show this off at work to all the iphone users.
