Help DROID Incredible random restart/reboot problem

Just giving an update. Called Verizon, went through their whole troubleshooting process which consisted basically of a battery pull, then a hard reset, neither of which worked at all. Solution is replacing the phone. Got mine yesterday, so far so good. For people having this proeblem, opening an appbrain account should be a priority if you don't have one already for a painless reinstall of your free apps on the older phone to the new. Good luck.

Well, I uninstalled Widget Locker and have not had Sense restart once. As much as it pains me I will have to go without Widget Locker until this is fixed. The restarts were becoming more frequent. Back to the boring HTC lockscreen. :(

THIS. I truthfully have been contributing ALOT of my post 2.2 issues with Widgetlocker. I have the same issue described in this thread.
I have had countless other "glitches" and issues since 2.2 and most seem to be pointing towards Widgetlocker.
I have still not decided if I am going to uninstall or learn to live with it.

The newest WidgetLocker update solved my problems. However, I'm rooted and I clicked the 5 second setting in the Advanced menu. If you're not rooted make sure you use Home Helper and select Sense as your Home App.

I think it has something to do with heat, because when my phone is warmer the random resets will happen a lot more often. but recently when i surf the net for more than like 5 minutes, the phone will reboot. i love the phone but i am thinking of switching to the samsung epic 4g for sprint :/

My phone has just started to do this after about a month and a half of owning it. It was really bad last Friday night. It was either constantly rebooting or freezing up on the HTC screen at the beginning of the reboot.

I've wiped the phone and even swapped out the SD card; but, alas, it is doing it again tonight. So far it's rebooted on me about 4 times tonight in the span of an hour.

I did call Verizon yesterday and they are sending me a replacement unit. Although I hope that takes care of the issue; I do agree that it seems to be heat related. Every time that it has had this rebooting problem, it is very hot to the touch.

I'm getting tired of these "smart" phones. Maybe I'll just go back to a standard flip phone with no frills.

I've been pulling my hair out over this, ever since I got Froyo! Never had it before the update happened weeks ago.

If I'm surfing the web hard, it'll reboot. Especially if I'm downloading multiple files. It sometimes won't even reboot completely, before rebooting again. If I pull the battery and wait a few minutes, it is sometimes okay. The phone is slightly warm to the touch, but definitely not "hot"

I also noticed this whilst using GPS and one day when the phone was on the dash and in the sunlight. That's when I suspected it could be heat related.

But if I'm in my climate controlled office and browse the web for 15 minutes, and that's too much heat, seems like a problem to me.

Early in the day before I got my replacement phone, my old one rebooted on me again. It was sitting on the table, I wasn't touching it. I immediately picked it up and felt the back. To my surprise, it was cool. As soon as the phone came back up, I checked the battery temp with the battery app that I have and it showed around 37c. So, I'm going to have to retract my heat suspicions from earlier. In my case at least, it wasn't heat related.

Not saying your issue wasn't heat related, but my phone rebooted starting at around 33C. It would never make it past 36C without rebooting. So 37C is definitely hot enough.

my issue is different tho, its like refreshing the homepage. it last like 3 seconds

This is Sense restarting. Not your phone restarting. I believe a factory reset should fix your problem.

Been looking around about random reboots, but nothing relevant to what I am seeing. Hoping for some help from here. Any suggestions/solutions welcomed!

Been noticing a plethora of random reboots lately. Can't pinpoint the exact time but I think it started after I recently rooted (about 3 weeks ago). I suppose it good also be related to FroYo I suppose, it's hard to tell.

A good example: I was (trying) to watch a video tonight and I got a RR. Tried logging in to this forum to then post my question and got two RR. Another example: on Saturday I was at an formal occasion and was trying to track the Ironman World Championships via the net while eating dinner. The whole time, my phone kept getting RRs to the point that I had to stop trying to check on the internet as it caused the RR every single time. Very frustrating.

In any case, I am now wondering if I should un-root? Kill FroYo? Dunno what to think. I'm not running too many root apps. I am using SetCPU and AdFree (that I can think of) but other than that, just "normal" apps from the marketplace. Not what I'd call a power user, but I think I should be able to use my phone's internet without getting RRs! By the way, doesn't seem to matter if I am using the net via 3G or WiFi, RRs happen both ways.

So...what to do? Un-Root? Uninstall Apps one by one? Kill FroYo? Many options, none of them good ones!

Thanks for any help.

BTW: Received the FroYo 2.2 via OTA, then rooted using UnRevoked. Root process had no issues/problems (that I know of). Dunno if any of that helps, but there it is.

Thanks.

I'm convinced the random reboots are heat related. I've had times where mine will continously reboot. The only fix is to pull the battery and wait 5 minutes for it to cool down.

Last night I had my Dinc on the car's dashboard as I was using the GPS navigation. It initially froze then started rebooting. Definitely heat related. Another time I was sitting in a hot car with the device resting on my leg while I read an ebook. The sun was beating directly onto it. Reboot! It will continously reboot until it cools down.

I agree WTF! Based on this thread and others, the random reboot seems to be a problem with DINCs.

I've had mine since launch and from time to time it does a random reboot. Ugh! Tonight it did a random reboot and then went into a reboot loop. Double ugh! I did a quick battery pull thinking that would solve the problem, but no luck - it just kept crashing. After reading this thread I pulled the battery for five minutes and that seems to have solved the problem. Just to be safe I also uninstalled a new game (Block Me Free) that I downloaded hours earlier today. Who knows maybe that had something to do with it.

Also, read that somebody thought it could be due to their SD card. They replaced it and the reboots stopped. I haven't changed mine (yet). Hopefully, pulling the battery and letting it cool will do the trick.

The reboot loop happened again, finally getting stuck on another loop of error windows (force close various apps that were open). In any event, ended up having to do a hard reboot and a factory reset. 24 hours in the phone is running great, faster, no problems - however the UI looks different (in a good way). The reset is pain in the butt since you have to reset a bunch of stuff on the phone, but may be worth it. We shall see.

Although I got all my apps through the android market I suspect the problem may have been caused by a bad app. So for now I am not loading any apps that didn't come with the phone and see how it goes. If all goes well I am going to load some apps but only one at a time. I think it may have been the Weather Channel app, since the reboot loop would happen shortly after that app was opened (but who knows).

One other thought, the random reboot and reboot loop happened after the OTA upgrade to Froyo. As I said since doing the factory reset I noticed that the look of the phone's UI has changed a bit (for the better). I wonder if the OTA upgrade didn't completely take hold and perhaps that caused it.

So beware of apps and maybe after the next OTA upgrade for android (forget what dessert it's called) I'll do a factory reset after.

Yo guys i think I just figured out why the incredible keep restarting for no reason. when you go to your home pages and long click one of your icons and move it does the icon move while the sam icon is still in place? It's like you copied the icon and are moving it around. If not try another icon. What I did was drag and delete all the copied icons to the garbage, even the widgets, and my incredible hasn't restarted yet.
