For some reason, I haven't been getting vm notifications, nor visual vm messages. I dialed in the old way and I had like 12 messages. I'm pretty stock, except for root and mobile AP.

Is there something wrong with my epic, or my account? Or is no a good time to figure out what Google Voice is all about?

Have since switched to Google Voice. But This guy had the fix at xda:

if you in fact have the VVM app installed do this, works every time:

settings > applications > manage applications > menu > filter > all

scroll down to voicemail and tap it

clear cache/data (its only one, i forget which)

now open the voicemail app

menu > compose > record a second or 2 of blank and send to activate@vvm.sprint.com

a few minutes you should get your voicemails. i've had it happen when flashing ROMs, yada yada, just horks it somehow

Note that "Clear data" is sufficient for your voicemail to work. It will trigger the auto-activation message but it will wipe out all your old voicemail messages. However, the server will push down the last 5 days messages. Any messages longer than 5 days will be lost for good.

If you compose a message to activate@vvm.sprint.com, your old messages will retain and the server will push down the last 5 days messages (some may be duplicates).
