How I got a sweet deal from Verizon

I've been with Verizon almost 2 years, I was 2 months away from my New Every Two upgrade discount. I was told at that time, you get about 50-100 dollors off a new phone depending on the phone.

I was 2 months shy, and they didn't want to cut any deals and I needed two new phones.

So, I when to the ipod site, added up the cost of a new ipodx2 (200$), first month plan (~200$) and cancelling verizon (~200$), total of ~600$.

To buy two new incredibles, it was going to run $1000+, they retail for ~$500.

So, I called their 800 number, and told the first guy, I need two phones today, I can cancel Verizon and get two iPhones for half the price of two new incridibles. He tried for about 30 mins to talk me out of it.

verizon might get the iphone, he said.

They've been saying that since the iPhone came out, I told him, plus it dosn't get me a phone today.

Our network is better, said verizon.

downloading youtube clips 5 seconds faster doesn't matter much to me, and I spend 99.999999% of my time in major cities, AND that dosn't get me a phone today, I told him.

We've got 4g LTE coming soon, said verizon.

Its not true 4g and won't be in my market for another year, and I need a phone today, I said.

well, maybe... let me... ummm...

then they transfered me to another person, when through the same deal, then a third person, went through the same blah blah. "Let me put you on hold," she said. When she came back she said, "we can do it."

So, I got two new incredibles, for $400, with a $100 mail in rebate on both, so really 100 a piece, 2 months before my new every two date.

They have really cracked down on the early upgrades. My daughter's phone broke and we went in 6 days before her upgrade date and they would not do it early, we went up 3 levels at Verizon. They all said no.

Wow really? When i got my incredible back in May, my contract wasnt up for two months I believe and they did it for me anyway. things must have changed drastically recently.

"it's not true 4g" .... and what EXACTLY does that mean? 4G = 4th Generation network. First there was analog, then digital, then rev 0/A, and now LTE. To my count, that's 4. Is my math wrong?

4G is (or was, I think the ITU-R might be caving a bit on that) defined by very specific technical standards. Amongst others, data rates for 100MB/s for mobile devices (ie phones) and 1 GB/s for stationary devices (4g modems). None of the current crop of "4g" networks come close to that, and some of them fail in other aspects as well.

question...you said you got 2 phones, what was the status of the 2nd line that you also got the phone for?

status? You mean new every two status? Her phone was still 2 months away from upgrade date as well.

i cant believe it took that long, most times they will give you an upgrade a little early anyway. tons of people do it.

I thought it was going to be easy too. I started by calling the local guys, who said they couldn't do anything. When they gave me such hassle, thats when I went and got iPhone prices for more ammunition.

Also Verizon says, they set their new every two at 20 months not 24 like most other companies, so in their view that new every two, is already an "early" upgrade.

I think having the price of the iphones in front of my, and showing them how that was cheaper for me than buying 2 new phones from them is what did it.

I was polite and curtious, but stressed I needed to buy a phone today. I also pointed out I was doing Verizon a favor by calling, had I just gone off online pricing, I would have bought the iPhones, but I like Verizon so I want to give them a chance to keep my account... of course i wasn't about to get on an AT&T plan and really have no desire for an iPhone, but they don't need to know that.

New every two keeps getting worse and worse. It used to be $100 and the last two times it was $50. Now it looks like it is dropping to $30. I found this poking around my account online the other day. What's the point?

the reason i asked was because there is a b1g1 sale on android phones. The inc is $150 so technically a new subscriber can get 2 Incs for 150 and also submit 2 $100 rebates and make $50.

After 1 year you are eligible for getting a new phone actually with a new 2 year contract and generally they will give it to you at normal 2 year contract price. You just dont get the NE2 discount is all. I have done this the last 2 times actually. This is why i am suprised you had to go thru so much effort. in the end that is what you got, 2 phones for $200 each and the rebate. They didnt give you the NE2 discount from what i am reading.

I've gotten early upgrades many times (been with Verizon vefore they were Verizon!, and I have 7 phones in my family: Wife, 4 kids and I have 2, my Incredible with unlimited everything for business and a Palm Pre Plus I use as a mobile hotspot).

Maybe it's because I send them so much money every month, I don't know. They want to keep me happy. I usually get what I want though.

Well, technically it was one phone for 2 something, the other for free, plus some other charges, can't remember the whole break down, I'll check the invoice when I get home. but in the end, I paid $400 for 2 phones with 2 $100 rebates, so $100 a phone basically.

You can cash in your NE2 after a year, but for less. And from what they said, the NE2 now days is only 30-100 off your next phone, if you wait the full 20 months, not the full new contract deals.

Needless to say, when they told me these things I wasn't happy.

"So if I wait 2 more months all I get is maybe 100 off?"

"Your making it in my best interest to cancel verizon then open a new account the next day, or go to a different carrier and get their sign up deals."

The carriers have been in a death match over customers, and have been giving phones away at below cost to get customers. I think now that Verizon is pulling ahead, they think they can stay in the customer lead, without giving away phones for less then they can buy them. I think thats why their cracking down on the new upgrades, unless you convince them your gonna bail on verizon if they don't.

This is the breakdown of what Verizon gave me.

Total: $108.26

$8.26+$192.26=$200.52

How did the

"2nd Phone:
Unit Price: $249.99
Discount: $149.98"

come about?
pretty sweet deal man, congrats on the deal! I do love my Incredible and wouldn't be happy on any other device at the current time. My first smart phone was an Eris I bought about a year ago, and then I got the Incredible about 4 months ago, and haven't been happier. I think I'll update after the year though. I keep my Incredible in a case so I'm hoping I can get a few $ for it when the time comes but who knows, I mean shit, Verizon is buying back the Eris for more than the D2 or DX I think. The one thing I do hate about the Incredible is the back of the phone, it feels cheap and it creeks and cracks. The Eris never had this problem.

I have been given upgrades early and have also been told sorry you can not upgrade early. Guess it all depends on who you talk to. But as soon as you are eligible you get tons of emails and even phone calls saying come into the store and see what we have.
I bought my Incredible off craigslist in July for 250 and sold my Eris which I hated for 200.

It's just really random. It depends on you, the people you talk to, whats going in the department that week maybe even that day. I wouldn't be surprised if there were quota's and such that they can't go above...

Just like police officers giving tickets, you may hit one that likes your smile but at the end of the day someone has to get a ticket and someone needs to be told no.

No idea really. I spent about an hour, telling everyone they transfered me to, "I need to buy a phone today, I can get 2 iPhones now for $600, so I'm giving Verizon a chance to make a deal."

The last lady put me on hold, then came back and said, "we can do it." Wasn't sure exactly what, I never said anything specific about what kind of deal I expected, just I needed a phone today, and total, after everything, I could get iPhones for $600.

When they agreed they just started telling me what deal they were going to give me.
