My Hero is just TOO lagy. Any chance of getting an Epic without paying 4G surcharge?

I've had my Hero for a little over a year now. I battled thru some issues such as the battery life etc, but thats been fixed. I have really enjoyed the phone for what it is, a pocket sized computer with all access to social networks and apps store. Also love the track ball.

However, for the past 5 months Ive battled a lag issue and I just cant take it anymore. I cant tell you how many times my phone has been "thinking" and I wanted to chuck it out the window...literally. Ive been to sprint, talk to their "help", no dice. I guess the processor just cant run fast enough??

Here's what I deal with. If I try to send someone a text I will click on the "messages" icon and in about 5 seconds my text list of people will pull up. Then when I click on a name to send a text the screen pops up the "loading" icon and the circular count down bar. The loading icon will stay thinking for about 45 secs (literally, not just my fabrication of time lapse). Sometimes less, but normally that long. Same when trying to make a call. Trying to click on a name or hang up with someone, everything there takes about 20 seconds to compute. Also pictures use to be quick to take and always made a clear shot. Now it takes 30-45 seconds between shots for the phone to save the picture and then get ready to take another. So 90% of the time you miss the shot you are trying to get waiting on the phone to save the previous picture and open the lens again. (Yes ive cleared all my saved pics as well to test). Its funny cause Facebook and Twitter work fine, screen pops up and updates instantly. Its the phones MAIN features that seem to be the problem (making calls, looking up contacts, texting people, taking pics on the go). So my time is spent staring at the phone waiting for it to do something so I can make my next call or send another text.

This is more then frustrating. I dont have many apps (just the basics- facebook, weather, google skymap, wefi connect, where, movies). I have 2 games. And thats it. Ive cleared all cache, cleared text history, you name it. Dont know what else to do but get a newer phone with more adequate hardware. I dont like the EVO (too big for my liking) but wouldnt mind the Epic. However, I have no need for 4G and dont want to pay the extra money just to have it. Do I have any choice in the matter or am I assed out? Id love a Hero 2, but who whos when that will be and it'll probably be 4G too I'm sure.

Just so over this phone's lag issue. If it didnt lag it would be the perfect phone bar none.

Heard Good things about the LG -

Seriously...if you want to rid yourself of lag....root it.
You are due for an upgrade anyway!

I am a Convert from the no i won't root club.....
Root and Flash....Makes your hero ROCK -
And its REALLY easy. Let me know if you need help.

I agree about the rooting.. hesitated at first and now there's no looking back. It won't solve all your lag issues but overclocking it makes it much more bearable, especially with a froyo rom.

Actually I was inclined to agree with you but if he does not want to root, then this is really a decent phone, my neighbor got one 2 weeks ago and actually I must say I was impressed, not for me, but a decent alternative if he does not want to upgrade to 4 G service charge of $10 ;)

I would root before getting this, imo;)

Thanks for the input everyone. I have thought about rooting but just never really looked into enough to see if its worth it. Im also not the most tech inclined, but if there are step by step instructions Im sure I can manage.

Its not the cost of the $10, its the principle. One, I dont NEED 4G, 3G is plenty fast for what I do. So why should I be handcuffed to pay for it just to get the latest/greatest phone? Especially when it will be free in probably 6 months. Charging extra for 4G is like a car company charging more to balance your tires because they have the lastest greatest machine. In the end, your still balacing my tires and the old machine did it just fine. Up your price a few cents to offset cost if you need to, but to charge a seperate $10 per month is ridiculous. Ive given Sprint enough of my money over the 14 years Ive been with them. They arent getting another $10 a month.

My Hero is much more responsive and "speedy feeling" now that I'm running the AOSP 2.2 ROM...it's made a world of difference. I don't have any keyboard lag, dialer lag, screen lag...it just works how I'd expect a low-end Android device to. I don't expect to play games on it, but all of my other apps work great now.

Also, the LG Optimus S is a great phone! It has better graphics performance that the Evo...same chip but smaller screen. The processor is slower than EVO but it's buttery smooth. It's a very very nice phone...especially since you can get it for free most of the time.

Buying a new phone that's not a huge upgrade from the Hero is such a vicious cycle. Evo/Epic are worth the upgrade in my opinion, without the $10 charge of course

INferno - Epic might not get Froyo - The Intercept got it today!

Blackmonday....would love to help. You are rooted...have you downloaded ROM manager?
Have you read through the all things root section?

It's 100% certain the Epic is getting Froyo, it's Gingerbread people are uncertain of. There have already been a few leaked versions of Froyo & Samsung has stated they released their version to the carriers already.

Go to the all things rooted section and open a thread, saying your ready to root and one of us will walk you through the process

Ok, Im ready to Root. Should I just go to all things root board and follow the steps? Or is there different kinds of rooting and I need to choose one?
