Okay, this is just a rant, so if mods see fit to delete, that's fine. I've been pouring through these forums, XDA and other sites in the quest for a solid Android tablet that is 1) ready for primetime, 2) doesn't cost $600.

I don't want a unit that I have to root and install all sorts of other software to make it work right, and don't understand why big companies can't make devices that work out of the box, when developers can "fix" these devices in a few weeks.

Yes, I know, Honeycomb is coming and CES is around the corner. I'm just frustrated. I waited a year for a solid Android phone to come out after the lackluster G1 was introduced (Droid, then Droid2), and just wish I didn't have to do the same thing this time around, watching as craptastic device after decent device with craptastic software are released.

Am I asking too much, here?

/Rant.

Right now, yes, you're asking too much. The only option right now that's fine out of the box is the Galaxy Tab. But it's $600.

Honestly, the ViewSonic G Tablet doesn't take much effort to get working properly. It should take less than an hour to install a custom ROM and get the market working (maybe longer if you're really taking your time with it).

In a few simple steps you can have the fastest Android device on the market for less than $400. But if you're not willing to put in a little effort, then you shouldn't be complaining.

I think you are.

When Google repeatedly states that Android is not yet ready for tablets and various manufacturers struggle to get Android running on their tablets then you know you are not buying a consumer-ready device. At least not yet.

I don't think Android tablets will be consumer-ready until 3.0 and they will probably need Tegra and 512Mb of ram.

In the meantime, you can buy some nice toys to play with if you are prepared to do a bit of work.

I have an Archos 70 that I am very pleased with, but I would not buy it for a non-tech savvy relative. Maybe this time next year there will be lots of consumer-ready Android tablets available with Google approved market access and working Flash pre-installed.

You could buy an iPod Touch if you want something that works out of the box and costs less than $600.

Sorry but yeah you are asking for too much. Android tablets are fairly new. There are a few out there that's pretty good. Archos, Galaxy tab, and personally I love my G-tablet. However, for what you want...I think I would go with the Galaxy tab. They are on sale right now at best buy. I think it's $499, right now.
But if you've already waited a year, then what's another 3-6 months. :p Wait for the Honeycomb devices.

Motorola is making their announcement on either 5 or 6 january at CES. Their tablet might even be available on 6 feb. They seem to have their act together. My Droid x is working very nicely. I think it will be far superior to any other android tablet and if the Ipad 2 doesn't get Flash, it will be at least equal to it and have much more freedom for creative app developers. Hang in for a week.

The Elocity A7 I had on order from Amazon finally came a week before Christmas, and the Dec. 24 update from their website makes it hum. Android 2.2 doesn't take full advantage of all the cores, either, so I'm expecting Gingerbread to make this baby sing--and even dance if market support gets extended to tablets. IMO, that's just a matter of time now that Google's decided to support Android on tablets and not just push the Chrome OS. Last I looked, some retailers were selling A7's for $300, which is a great price considering all its capabilities.

Kinda figured I was being unreasonable. And whiny...
Actually I honestly don't think you are being unreasonable. or whiny. I feel the same way.

I blame it on Google, (god help me for saying that lol) but yeah Google has the resources, developers, time and money to get this on track. Consumers want this, manufacturers want this and yet we have to be force to wait until Honeycomb. instead of buying every outfit out there, they should focus more on getting this thing done. I think they should have had this out last year, but eh.

CES is just a few days away and it seems that the Motorola Xoom would have Honeycomb and be a true Android tablet. Others like the Notion Ink Adam and the Viewsonic GTab don't have true Market access or Honeycomb but are actually closer to getting it than alot of other Tablets. So yeah I too hate waiting but we have no choice. :D
