The only reasonable explanation I could come up with is him somehow getting your google pw (shouldn't be that hard if you wanted to do it to someone you know or is on the same public wifi) and then sync his (spare?) phone with your account.

with physical access to his phone, all it would take would be a simple Bluetooth transfer (unless the whole phone is passcoded). Then go through a rigmarole to misdirect him when he comes back from the bathroom or whatever.

Simplest way to find out would probably be for him to ask someone else who was there. Their efforts to keep a straight face ought to be a giveaway...
