Help 2.2 Froyo for Transform?

Upvote 0
Maybe we should all start to pester the folks that put out the statement on Oct 6th about 2.2 being released before the end of 2010. I blame both parties, Sprint and Samsung for false advertising.

I've already received a rather encouraging response from Caroline,

"Yes, the 2.2 update is still in the works for the Samsung Transform and we publish info when ready to push out the software. We want to assure an optimal experience for our customers, so apologize for brief delay.

Thanks,"

Like I wrote before, the Epic, one of Sprint's flagship phones, still does not have an official Froyo to date. There were rumors that it was going to drop before the new years, but no joy.

Now consider the fact that the Transform was released later than the Epic and add Sprint ID to the mix = don't hold your breath.

I have both the Evo and Epic. The Epic is running a leaked build of 2.2, and it does not nearly compare to the Evo in terms of stability and maturity.

Sprint may have indicated in different ways that the Transform will be upgradable when a new OS is available, but certainly has never *promised*, in terms of a contract or conditions of sale, that you *will* get anything other than what was originally shipped/equipped. You may jump up and down and get very upset, but that is just silly.

At the same time, having also acquired the Galaxy Tab, I have to say that I have become ever more disappointed with Samsung in a variety of ways. To add, if I ever wanted to run AOSP, I'd get an HTC device. For you who are still within 30 days, I'd look at the Evo Shift. Yes, it's a WiMax device, which means more money, but the development community will be much larger.

YMMV.

Like I wrote before: Don't hold your breath for Froyo.

Okay, enough of you haters, if you don't have something good or beneficial to say, we don't wanna hear it. The freakin' LG Ally just got FroYo, I'm pretty damn sure that if we don't get FroYo from Samsung, Google is going to step in, just like with the intercept. And once again, if you don't have anything helpful, good or informational don't say anything at all.

Did you read what you wrote? Was any of what you wrote informational, good, or helpful? Who's the hater? LOL! :p

I've only had a smartphone for a few months. I sent my first text ever just a few months ago also. I think 2.1 is fine and when we get 2.2 I'll probably be even happier. We'll get it when we get it. It's not like our phones are crap. PS, I'm not some child with their first phone, I'm an old retired guy. I'm gonna need a lot of tech support from you guys!:D

I talked to a SPRINT Rep and was told last night that they have got the post on their board from Samsung, and they will start pushing out the update, around Feb. MARCH.

I hate to be a negative nancy about this, but until I see on my phone that it's got an update coming, I'm not going to believe it. They've already shown their word doesn't really mean anything. They are just giving us a random date a few months out to keep people from complaining. Then come April 1 they'll probably give us another date that's a few months out.

I really really hope I'm wrong, because I think the phone is good and can be a really great one if they update it, but I've lost my faith in Sprint's customer service.

Here is the latest official word.

"Sprint's been more vocal than others about working on Froyo updates for its phones, whether it's a blog post, or taking to Twitter. But if you're thinking about bugging someone on the phone or in a store, you're not likely to get anywhere. Above is a memo that went out yesterday regarding the Samsung Epic 4G and Transform, and the Sanyo Zio. Clearly, there's no date scheduled for Froyo to ship, so don't ask.

You will, however, hear that Sprint "works closely with our manufacturing partners" in getting updates out the door and "as quickly as possible" and all the usual bullet points. No surprise there, other than the Zio's possibly going to get Froyo. We were on the fence about the Transform, but it's listed, too, so there you go.

Sprint's said it, and we'll say it again, too -- it'll be ready when it's ready."

This is from an official response from Sprint, via andoridcentral.

This is a step by step guide to gain "Root Access" and Install Ported Android 2.2 Froyo RC1 Build on Samsung Transform. Follow the guide CAREFULLY and STEP BY STEP and you will have a Samsung Transform Rooted WTH 2.2 FROYO!!!! If you dont follow these steps CORRECTLY you can BRICK YOUR PHONE!!!!!! With that being said LETS BEGIN!How to Root Samsung Transform

Warning

FLASHING CAN BRICK YOUR PHONE!!!!
This is the first time I've done anything with Android, and figured others like me may need a guide to flashing. This guide is only to be used with the files linked to here using the Samsung Transform. Using other files and programs can and has bricked phones.

Instructions

1. Download and install the SW Updater (86,252 KB). This will require you to reboot your computer after it is installed.
2. Download the Kernel/Recovery file (10,390 KB).
3. Navigate to c:\Program Files\Samsung Electronic\SWUpgrade\Models\Binary and delete EVERYTHING inside of this folder.
Note that in 64bit versions of Windows, you need to be in c:\Program Files (x86)\Samsung Electronic\SWUpgrade\Models\Binary

WARNING: LEAVING ANYTHING IN THIS FOLDER AT THIS STEP CAN BRICK YOUR PHONE!

4. Move kernel_recovery.tar to c:\Program Files\Samsung Electronic\SWUpgrade\Models\Binary

WARNING: UNZIPPING THE .tar FILE CAN AND WILL BRICK YOUR PHONE! ONCE THE FILE IS IN THE Binary FOLDER DO NOT TOUCH IT!

5. Run SWUpgrade and verify that the version number is 1.0.001 in the title bar. Any other version will come up with an error. This happened to me my first time through.
6. Follow all instructions in SW Upgrade, substituting the End key with the phone's Power key.
7. Your phone will now have Vampirefo's recovery and kernel! AND ROOT ACCESS!!!

NOW ON TO THE FROYO!!!!!!

Note: Backup your data with Titanium Backup, sync your contacts (or export them to the sd card) FIRST!!!! This process WILL ERASE all of your apps and settings. You will have a scratch phone!!

Recovery: recovery.rfs
Kernel: vampirefo_2.2_kernel.zip
Froyo RC1: FroyoRC1.zip

1. After BACKING UP YOUR DATA and REBOOTING your phone, connect your Transform to your computer and enable USB Storage.

2. On the SDCard, create a directory called "sdx" with three sub-folders: "zip", "updates", and "backup".

3. Download the recovery.rfs and vampirefo_2.2_kernel.zip files listed above

4. Download The Froyo rc1 build

5. Copy recovery.rfs to the update sub-folder on the sdcard.

6. Copy vampirefo_2.2_kernel.zip and FroyoRC1.zip to the zip sub-folder on the sdcard.

7. Unmount the USB storage. Turn the phone off. Disconnect the USB cable. Press VOLUME DOWN, VOICE DIAL KEY, and POWER (in that order) and hold them until the phone turns on. The phone should start up and come up in recovery mode. The background will say "Transform E.R". Reconnect the USB cable to conserve power, but you must disconnect it before you can power into recovery.

8. Use the volume down key to select "Backup, Restore, Flash". Press the Menu soft key to select it.

9. Select "Backup both". Press the Menu soft key to select it, then press the Home to confirm. This backup will help if you mess up, or want to return to Android 2.1. It takes about 3 minutes to finish.

10. Now under the same "Backup, Restore, Flash" menu, use the Volume Down key and move to "Flash (recovery.rfs)". Press the Menu key to select and the Home key to confirm. This only takes a minute or so to complete. It tells you to restart the phone afterward.

11. Use the back key to return to the main recovery menu. Select "Reboot options" with the Menu key. Use the Volume Down key to select "Reboot to Recovery" and press Menu to confirm. The phone will immediately restart.

12. Use the Volume Down key and select "Go To Console". Press the menu key to select.

13. Open the keyboard and press the Enter key. Type "rfs" (without the quotes, just the letters r f and s). Press enter. The phone will say some things about formating files. This takes about a minute. It will say "format successful" three times when done.

14. Type "exit" (again, no quotes, just e x i and t). Press enter. Close the keyboard.

15. Use the Volume Down key to select "Apply zip from SD Card". Press Menu soft key to select.

16. Select the "FroyoRC1.zip" file. Press the Menu soft key to select and Home soft key to confirm. This takes up to five minutes to complete. It will say a restart is needed, But Don't restart yet.

17. Press the back key and use the menu key to get back to the "Apply zip from SD Card" menu.

18. Now select the "vampirefo_2.2_kernel.zip" file. Press the Menu soft key to select and Home soft key to confirm. This takes just over a minute. It will say a restart is needed.

19. Use the back key and go to the main recovery menu. Select "Reboot options" with the menu key.

20. Now select "Reboot to System". and wait. This takes up to 5 minutes to load with no sense of time until completion. First you will see an apple disolve into dust then a twirling red android symbol.

Once it loads you are now the proud owner of Android 2.2 Froyo RC1 Build Tranform!

Congratulations. The first things you want to test is the phone's data connection by looking for the 3g symbol and opening the market or browser. If it doesn't come up, restart the phone. It should restart in under a minute (mine takes 38 seconds at last count).

Credit goes to VAMPIREFO (Recovery, Kernel, Port) & ZRMXP85 (Froyo RC1 Build)
