I have a DroidX this is my first root attempt. I am using z4root to "permanently root" the X. I am a little concerned because it has been trying to root for about 40 minutes now. Can I kill the app without damaging my phone? (I don't have anything backed up I ran across http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/194918-rooting-dummies-extras.html after starting the root. I wish I had seen it before. I would have done the pre-root steps).

Been running for like 10 minutes....getting a little nervous but not THAT nervous. Hey, if Outlaw can do it :)

Phone locked up after about 15 minutes. Pulled battery. Phone came up like normal. This time I had an icon for Z4 in app drawer(didn't before). Clicked on it and ran 'permanent root' and it ran for like 15 seconds and phone re-booted. Superuser icon in app drawer now. Officially on the dark side now.

My thanks to Outlaw for holding my hand thru this process!

Awesome, I actually haven't had a chance to try rooting again until tonight. I think I will try again during the Falcons game tonight. Before I do that though, what are the risks of rooting by the way? Oh, and also what happens when a OTA installs?

Also under settings -applications check allow apps from unknown sources, then in settings-applications -development check usb debugging.

Once you're rooted, an OTA probably won't install. The presence of CW Recovery on your Dinc or Droid X causes the installation to abort. If for some reason it DID go through, your system would be updated and you would be un-rooted. There are a couple of programs to root the various Droid phones, so you should be OK, either way - if the installation fails, status quo, no change (no harm/no foul), if it goes through, you've got an updated system, and now you need to re-root your phone, which is usually pretty easy.
