To use your phone with another (capable) carrier, you must unlock the phone. This is different than rooting the phone.
Keep in mind that you may not get T-mobile's 3G network using a phone that's compatible with at&t's 3G network. You'll have to find out what bands T-mobile's 3G network runs on and then make sure that the Captivate supports those bands in HSPA.
The captivate can't get tmobile 3g, but I believe that the vibrant can get att 3g. you could get voice service and edge data on tmobile though. There is an app in the market (don't remember the name) that you can use to get your phones unlock code.

Althought the epic is basically a captivate with a keyboard to me, i do like the shift 4g over the epic.
I just realized aside from the hero, the epic is the only full touchscreen phone on sprint
(the transform, intercept, and moment...which to me are pretty all the same device are all hybrid)
I might be willing to trade my Epic 4g for your captivate. Just got married and my wife and I are combining cell phone plans. She's unwilling to let go of her iphone. if you're interested, PM me.
