Wow, if that were to work it would almost put cellphone companies out of busines.... ALMOST!!!
Naturally the masses take their time catching on to new things that sound too good to be true. They are veey cautious. Remember way back when you were one of the 1st people you knew who ditched their land line and went strictly with a wireless phone. And your friends and family told you that you were crazy, that everyone needs a land line... how many of those nay-sayers have also ditched their land lines all these years later as well?
I could envision talking to just about everyone I know through Google Messenger, Facebook and making internet calls via Skype or something similar. My ex-fiancee & I got rid of our business land line in favor of Ooma, which operates free over the internet. If that's available for land lines today, surely cellphones are just around the corner.
It would probably pretty much suck for the 1st couple of weeks... months even perhaps. But it would make for an interesting experiment. Imagine yourself in a 'Survivor' type TV show, only filmed in the city with technology and all that good stuff... 'Techno-Survivor", and the object of the game was to keep communications up with as many friends and family and coworkers as you could with no money for monthly plans or bills or anything, but any and all the technology you could think of that would help you to accomplish this. The object being figuring out how well you could keep in touch with everyone in your life if say you got laid off tomorrow and had to cut way, way, WAY back on your outgoing expenses.
Could you get by without a plan on your phone?
