my phone is now rooted and i can wifi tether thanks to the folks over at droidforums.net! i have a freaking router in my pocket!

and the amazing moment?
now let me preface that this is not a knock against the iphone but a knock against at&t (well maybe to the iphone users for accepting horrid data connections).

i work at a small retail store in nyc. i was at the front of the store by the cash registers... two people were downstairs (75ft away and 15ft down... approx)... they were both connected to my phone via wifi tether and both getting 200kb/s down. why is this cool? because they have no service in the basement!

may i also point out that i tested the opposite as in i was downstairs with a full 3G and somebody at the back of the store upstairs was connected to me.

Be very very careful with tethering, if you are using large amounts of data in a short period of time they will start to notice, and if you use 5GB or more that every month you will most likely be charged extra. They can and will charge you $1.99 per MB OR add on a data card plan that runs about $50 or $60. If you truly need to tether a lot then you should add on the tethering plan when they release it, and remember in your contract it says you are NOT ALLOWED to tether at all so if they catch you then your in trouble. I do tether sometimes but only when I am in a car with no WiFi anywhere and need a true PC instead of a smartphone.

yeah i'm well aware of verizon's "unlimited (5gb) data plan"
and i don't really need to tether at all... only did it yesterday to show the iphoners what it feels like to get a proper signal in nyc... everywhere

i too only use it when i need it but we have the option which is great.

and note to verizon... large amounts of data transfer does not necessarily mean that somebody is tethering but most likely that they are ftp'ing... is that in the contract? that we can't ftp? no.

T-Mobile will merely throttle you for a month if you are a "heavy user" and will restore you back to normal the following month (a friend works for T-Mobile tech service).

Doesn't Verizon do this? Or is it an automatic charge?

As mentioned in numerous other threads, there is no mythical 5GB limit for the Unlimited data plan with Verizon. The 5GB limit is related to their air cards....FYI.

i've heard that b4 and thx for the heads up. i tethered all the time using my horrid-verizon-crippled touch pro and i was never charged or throttled.

Yeah I highly doubt they sit and watch who uses data at an extremely high rate for a short period of time.. there's way too many of us for them to do that. Your fine to tether. You won't get caught unless you maybe make it your house internet and use it all the time 24/7 then MAYBE. But I'm sure they'll never catch you tethering..

i have had a smart phone plan for 4 years now, and habitually go in the 15-20gb of use a month and nothing has ever happened.. stop scaring people...

I work for vzw there is no 5gb cap for our plans with the droid, however I think they were going to use that but decided against cuz I have seen a few cust with capped plans on their blackberrys but they should not be added and if they are we will adjust ur bill as its our fault

If you want to tether and stay within Verizon's Terms of Service, you know, the one where it says specially that you can't tether without a Mobile Broadband Plan, here's how you will have to do it: Verizon Wireless Tethering Plan The mythical 5GB cap doesn't exist, as long as you don't tether.

I think, for now, I'll just stick with PDANet and keep my fingers crossed. I have an aircard, but when my 5gig cap nears on it, the tethering of the Droid really helps out a lot.

I believe the current employee (work/worked) who has current info about the Droid plans.

5GB cap or not they still have the right cancel your contract or charge you extra, it is in the ToS/Contract.

Doesn't PDA net make it look like you are using your 3G connection? So how can they tell.

Most of us stream music, I'm sure that uses a lot of data at one time. Also there are FTP apps on the market that allow you to FTP. I could upload a huge file to my server since I have the space on my SD card to hold a file that huge to upload.
