Root Someone hold me :( "com.android.phone has stopped unexpectedly"

Okay. So on Sunday I flashed to Cognition 3.04 and everything was working like a dream.

Yesterday (Tuesday morning) I suddenly can't get any calls - I would hear it ring but the phone wouldn't unlock, so once I unlocked it the message "The process com.android.phone has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again." with a single option to "Force Close". My phone wouldn't vibrate for some reason but everything else worked normally.

Today as I was Googling I bumped into advice to factory reset, so I backupped everything and went for it. Now my phone will not turn on, I see the AT&T white screen, I see the Cognition screen and that's as far as I get. :(

Any advice?

Edit: I see why it's not loading. I tried wiping again with the side buttons and the power, and I got the error "The application Setup Wizard (process.com.android.setupwizard) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again." Sigh.

Haha, no no don't be scared! I'm not even sure if it had anything to do with flashing roms, when googling that error most people hadn't even rooted...it happened for other reasons.

I just went back to stock, as I have to get to work and would like to at least have a phone that powers on. Lol. I'll flash back to Cognition tonight, along with saying a little prayer that whatever quirks I got the first time, do not come back for a second visit.

You need to get into Download Mode and redownload/reflash Cognition. In the future, I advise AGAINST a factory reset on any custom rom, reason being most are using some type of lagfix which converts the phone's file system. "Factory reset" doesn't know any better, and will not respect the converted file system, so it's going to do some unwanted stuff to your phone.

If all of a sudden, days later, your phone starts to Force Close, I'd think it was because of something you did/something you installed that got the phone all mixed up. So try and think back to see if you can identify the change that set your phone off, so that you don't repeat it once you're back to a working ROM.

Again, get into Download Mode, flash to stock (process steps depend on the batch of your phone), wipe the phone (Odin Master Clear, or GSM Master Reset via dialer codes), and then flash Cognition again.

did you use titanium to restore apps and data to the phone. that seems to be a common cause for crashes like that, (you cant restore system data from 2.1 to 2.2)

I was having similar issues cause I was backing up everything (all apps + system/user data). Somehow a bad/incompatible com.android.phone got in there and nothing was working. I wiped my backups & only backed up my apps, then flashed. Everything's been A-OK ever since.

Ah thank you, it makes sense...I'll definitely remember that. I'm just a beginner, it was my first time flashing but I did read everything beforehand and made sure to properly practice the different methods of restoring back to stock, getting into recovery menu, getting SDK running, all before flashing. The time spent on that certainly paid off.

I did read that it could've been something I downloaded after the switch, but the only thing I had downloaded after was that Nasa app. Which I did uninstall, but I still got the error.

Oh indeed...I used Titanium since that's what the video I was following said to use. Should I use something else instead tonight?

Crap. I DID back up all apps + system/user data. Again, the video said to do so...even if on the screen it was written to do it another way, but I had already done what the voice said to do. So I can use Titanium but just restore the apps.

You guys are amazing :D

It's not the backing up of the system data which burns you, but trying to restore it across different OS versions/ROMs.
