Unlimited data and tethering or hotspot?

I was able to keep my unlimited data plan but I was wondering if that means you can use the hotspot or tethering without any worries of charges from at&t.

Also when I check my features on att.com it just says smartphone data plan unlimited and costs 30 a month. Is that what everyone else pays for unlimited ? Im coming from a bb data plan for 30 a month.

follow these steps

Menu - Settings - Wireless & NetworksMobile Networks - Access Point Names - Menu - New APN

enter these settings

Name: AT&T
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: leave blank
Port: leave blank
Username:WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password:CINGULAR1
Server: leave blank
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
MMS Port: 80
MCC:310
MNC:410
Authentication Type: leave blank
APN Type: leave blank

save, then restart your device

go back to apn settings and make sure your have a green dot next to the AT&T apn(if not, select it)

then go back to wireless settings, and hotspot should be there! im currently on an unlimited plan, and it works perfectly :)

I have a new Atrix and I do have the hot spot tick on my phone and I have the 2 gig a month plan for $25. I can turn on the hot spot just fine. Do your settings allow you to use it without AT&T knowing you are using this as a hot spot for you laptop? Just curious. I am tryig to not root this phone.....it runs fo good without it. I had a captivate I rooted to get it to perform faster but you kill any chance of updates unless you go through all the BS of Odin....mods......etc.

Yes, they can.
This was an OLD SCHOOL trick to be able to use a BlackBerry as a modem (Actually, you used the BB as a USB modem and set this WAP settings in your Dialup networking settings)
. It worked great for years. Then, AT&T started catching onto devices talking to WAP's they were not provisioned for. I used this trick from 2008, through early 2010 with no problems. Even being on the Unlimited BB data plan. Then, last summer, they started billing me for Tethering. A lot of people found this happening to.

The only way around it, we had to install a program like Tether or PDANet (Both have android versions) that turn your phone into a Proxy server. So, it's talking to the proper WAP.

They may not have caught onto people using the WAP hack on Atrix, yet, but give it time. They will and they will bill for it.

i had to change from my unlimited when I got the atrix. Yes, AT&t knows if you are using the cell for an APN. I had an wimmo 6.5 phone, the phone being the only internet in the house. Never got any grief from AT&T bout tethering or data use for almost three years(my average is over 4gb per month), but once I hit the 2gb limit for a month, they would throttle it back. Noticably, to the point where it was almost unusable. After a day or two, they would back off on the choke hold. Could actually see a slowdown and go look at data usage, and it would be show me to be at the 2 gb zone.

I have an unrooted attic and setup tethering exactly as explained above this weekend and it worked flawlessly. I too have been curious if art knows weare using our phones this way and will they start charging me for this service. I have an unlimited plan from my iphone. I wont use this service very often but it sure came in handy this weekend while I was out of town!

Further proof they can tell when you are tethering...

AT&T forcing illegal data tetherers to sign up for official tether plan | DVICE

I got hit with the $10 a month extra for tethering (I'm grandfathered into the Unlimited data/txt plan, tethering was $10 more).

Now, it looks like they are taking the unlimited data away, and changing iPhone users over to the $45 a month, 4Gb with tethering plan.
How long before they do it to other phones???
