So I got my Xperia X10 last November from AT&T. So far no update to 2.1 even though Sony already released it. I'm finally fed up with waiting so now i turn to the dark side... Completely new to this, so do I need to flash or root my phone to get to 2.1? Can everything be restored to 1.6 for the manufacture warranty just in case something goes wrong? If I screw up and accidentally brick my phone can I get it back to 1.6 with a hard restore? Any input is appreciated.

p.s. being completely clueless, I planned to use this [FLASHTOOL GUIDE] HOW TO for n00bies - xda-developers

Yes you can get back to stock if you need to send in for warranty etc. Ther eis even a thread somewhere with the stock 1.6 firmware to go back to if you end up needing to download it at some point. You do need to flash the new 2.1 update. I used Global Generic 2.1 and have not looked back once! Plus you get multitouch!! I was on the fence the way you are in the beginning, after it was done and said it was real easy. A couple of the best things to get is xRecovery and Titanium Backup (or similar for backup)
