Some thoughts about supporting Eclair development for I7500

So the beginning of this year and mustymod's port gave us hope of finally seeing Eclair on our Galaxies. The hope is even higher when one sees what drakaz is tweeting. He is seriously considering to give it a shot too.

After seeing his tweets, a thought crossed my mind. Wouldn't it be great if him and mustymod teamed up somehow, as I'm sure they'll both benefit from each other's knowledge on the subject.

I guess both of them are doing this mostly for fun and research, but still, I think you'll agree that there is a fair amount of spare time they are investing in this, surely. For that reason, wouldn't it be nice if we could find some way to give them some kind of financial support too. I'm sure there are lot of us from this forum alone that are willing to donate. Now, I'm not quite sure about the details on how this can be accomplished, but there must be some way.

Of course, first thing first. I just wanted to see how the rest of you on feel about this idea. If you think it is doable (the donations part), then we should contact both of them to see what they think about it.

I would be happy to donate 20 or 30 euro for a fully functional and stable port (akin to galaxhero), but unless the phone was fully functional (ie wifi, bluetooth, gps, sensors etc), i don't think i'd even bother with the rom.

Also, there is a dependency on the rom being finished within the next month for me, as i don't think i can hang on much longer tbh - already scoping milestones on ebay!

Ideally mustymod would give drakaz what he has done so far (remember it was the base stuff that drakaz had trouble with when he tried to port 1.6) which would give him a jumping off platform and progress would then double between the two of them.

If a fully functional 2,0 for the galaxy was available in 4-6 weeks time, i think you'd find a hell of a lot of people willing to donate (even 50 people @20 euro each is well worth the effort the lads are putting in!), but until we know how development is going, i cant see large numbers of people donating, unless it's minor "encouragement" donations!

For the moment it is unclear how mustymod has achieved to make 2.0 work on the galaxy (see sticky thread about why it's not that easy (impossible) to achieve that). I'd donate if I knew that this guy has actually written some code to make it work. If it's just a leak from Samsung... why bother....

although lots of new phone will coming this year, I still wish to stick with Galaxy. at least this year.
new & updated ROM with native AOSP android system is very good news. means they can do updating system without SAMAUNG to release any stuff, Just need google's. True open Galaxy is coming.;)

I am willing to donate too, if it is stable & functional as Galaxo.:D

Mine is for sale as well... PM if interested

It's a good phone but I'm so bored with it. Samsung seriously screwed up BIG time and I think they don't even realise it.
What's so hard about releasing new Android versions... It's called customer support ret*rds!
I've always been a Samsung fan (was my 4th Samsung in a row in 4 years)... but this was my last one

HTC is the way to go. At least they communicate with their customers & releasing updates.
(And with HTC I also mean the Nexus ofc :D XDA power!)

I don't exactly know if and how drakaz and musty communicate, but main idea of my post was to create and encourage some sort of communication/collaboration channel between the two (and others). I am not aware of existence of any such thing for Galaxy development. Correct me if I'm wrong. I think we would benefit from that.

However, recent situation unfolding complicates things a bit. Drakaz is still willing to give it a try, regardless of donations, but as most of you know, he needs a phone for development. On the other hand, mustymod seems to be dropping out completely, since he cannot receive paypal donations anymore.

Nonetheless, if we had some collaboration utility (at least a forum and maybe some sort of svn/cvs/git/whatever repository for the code too) surely the things will be easier. I am sure there are other people apart from drakaz and mustymod with a knowledge who can make a difference in this, even on this forum alone (I think kam is surely one of them). We just need to get them all together, and somehow encourage them to work together.

What do you think about that?

Hi,

I posted about this in the stickie thread. Drakaz has a git repository already and it would appear that the RIL was made possible by disabling some configs for CDMA (not that I can confirm this but Drakaz made some post about it on a french forum!).

I think mustymod personally is just in it for the money, while I think development should be rewarded I still believe that these things are for everyone, Android by nature is allegedly open-source yet people want money to give people something, quite a wrong attitude if you ask me!

check my posts in the stickie on page 2 there's some details in there. I'm prepared to do some poking about if people can point me to the tools needed. Also can I setup a emulated galaxy?

Thanks mobiousdigital. Didn't saw that. As I didn't see that new dev site thread from numus, which is BTW a great idea.

(must get myself some spectacles :) )

I agree, looks to be a good idea to get a forum for development going but it needs developers to drive it as well.

Wonder if this ROM mustymod made can be reverse engineered?

Wonder if this ROM mustymod made can be reverse engineered?

I think there is an possibility,
since mustymod is using latest phone image for 1.5 to adopt to 2.0 PDA, I think he making an "post command process" in 1.5 system to log the communication between PDA & Phone. Hack in the 2.0 AOSP to use SAMSUNG's command than can be done.

but this still need well knowledge of android system coding.

Has anyone tried to ask him if he would share the sources with us? I'll leave him a comment on his blog. It couldn't hurt.

@mobiousdigital
I tweeted drakaz to inform him of the forum (don't know how often does he visit this one or if he's already aware of the new dev forum), but he didn't responded yet.
I am also willing to contribute, since I do have certain C and Java programming experience, but unfortunately not so much on a (linux) system level.

I believe all the tools needed for poking about is some text editor and a GNU/Linux ARM toolchain. Not sure about the emulated galaxy though.
