When will a rooting method come out that doesn't wipe data?
It doen't have to be 1 click, i just don't want to lose all my data.

EDIT:I finally rooted anyway, I gave up waiting for a 1 click root. Since I already had to wipe data, does anyone have any ROMs they recomend.

Really...there won't be a method like easy root for the droid?

Im not sure how you rooted the droid.. All I know is with this phone you have to downgrade first then install a custom already rooted RUU.. Even if it is possible it wont be anytime soon... Even when you install a rom you wipe everything.. Its not that big of a deal really?

You do it almost every time you flash something through CWM anyways. If you don't like losing your data and resetting your screens root may not be something you'll like
Its not the resetting my screens that i hate, its that i have hundreds of apps and they take forever to re-download but once you root you can use titanium backup to backup your apps before flashing a new rom(& i know root is somthing i like, i rooted my og droid(once using adb & once w/ easy root))

I'd say at least another month, maybe 2. It took that long for an Eris and Incredible version. Wiping data isn't that big of a deal, IMO. It took over 6 months to root the Eris if I remember correctly and then probably 2-3 months on the Incredible . It was a long wait for both phones , I'm shocked this phone was rooted so fast I am going to do the ADB method tonight

I don't know why it would be a big deal to lose data if you're going to Root you're probably going to wipe your data at least once every few weeks trying diffrent ROMS. I know I probably wiped my Incredible at least 50 times haha

What exactly r u worried about losing? Contacts calendars gmail r backed up to ur acct, pictures r on ur sd card, if ur using launcherpro u can even save ur homescreen layout/settings, sms backup will save ur txts. U stand to lose pretty much only ur call log and maybe apps if it doesnt syn right?. Just take a picture of ur app drawer

Is there a reference I can read about that explains RUUs? I'm generally familiar with rooting, alternate ROMs and kernels, but I don't understand the term RUU or the impact that the downgrade has on the existing partitions. I'm guessing it's destructive to the data partition.

I'm also looking for a low touch root in place type of install. For a few months, I tried all the ROM flavors on my D1, but I settled on a basic root only process. Just enough to su so setcpu and Titanium work. Unless a jaw dropping UV kernel comes out, I'm unlikely to push past plain old su. I'm still stock right now. I'm happy enough with alt launchers, and I use replacements for most of the stock apps. So I'm already mostly indistinguishable from pure google with the same launchers and apps installed.

We're all different, though, I'm sure someone is reading this and saying dudewtf to themselves. Like the OP, this is what I do, this is what I want. Why else would we be reading root threads? Why else would there be 15 different ROMs already?

Well not sure about the RUU and partitions, it does wipe the data and system partitions though. When you go through the current root process you will be running the newest stock firmware, that sounds like what you are wanting. There is no need to load any ROMs if you don't want to. There is a nice custom UV kernel out there that will give you some good battery life improvements.

So again not sure what partitions other then system and data that the RUU will impact, I know that it will not touch your radio or anything like that. You can think of the RUU as a SBF that we used over on the D1. The benifit of the RUU is that you do not have to use RSDLite, and they can be flashed directly from the Bootloader.

I would say if all you are going for is root running the stock setup that this current root process is very much the thing that would work for you.

But I thought SBFs only touched /system. At least the one I settled on for the long haul allowed /data to persist untouched through an update install.

I guess I need to wait for a ROM that can tolerate the stock ROM's /data and has been tested thoroughly against it. Although, if I only had to downgrade and restore once and from there I could stay current with a /data backup, I could live with one wipe. I just need to crowdsource my ROM choice so I can stick with it. I'll need to move on from the ROMs that start with step 1: wipe data, do it, deal with it.

I never had to use an SBF, I rooted my Droid 1 using the update.zip method. The update.zip method did wipe /data, and I'm pretty sure the SBF did as well.

If you are using the current root method it would only be one data wipe. Then you really wouldn't need one unless you are going to go with a custom ROM. Most if not all of the custom ROMs are going to advise you wipe before moving to it because of the differences in the frameworks.

You can always use an app like Titanium Back up to back up your data and then restore it after you have root. So you would not be able to restore after that first wipe to get root, however any wipe after that would be able to be restored.

the phone is only 2 weeks old there is no way you have that much important information on it yet... root now so you can backup your files before you get too involved... I transferred my games from my incredible and I love it... level 65 gunbros, 3* angry birds, and my other games I dont have to start over...
sucks that you can not do this without root access or i'm sure less people would root their phones
