prob aughta just let this thread go away slowly, but i cant help to think about how much apple could potentially benefit from this. isnt the ability to root, load custom roms and themes the draw to these phones? <-(rhetorical) i mean, if you cant do that why not just have an iphone? seriously

Do you honestly think that, even without root, the level of customization and flexibility on the iPhone is anywhere in the same ballpark with Android?

If that's what you think, I'm guessing you either have never owned an iPhone, or haven't looked very hard at the apps available on Android.

Let's take one easy example: Tasker. This app would never, ever exist on the iPhone. It's incredibly powerful and would never be approved in the app store.

Plus, part of the reason I jumped to Android was flexibility in hardware. Apps add up and slowly you have a real investment in apps - and in a year, or two years, I don't know if I'm going to want a bigger or smaller screen, a physical keyboard, a trackball, a notification LED, whatever. Since I have my apps on Android, I have choices. If I buy apps on the App Store, I will forever be restricted to What Steve Jobs Thinks Is Best.

i owned the first three iphones, but thanks. if you want to discuss apps we can, but i dont remember saying anything about apple apps being better.... android market is by far a better bargain.
better bargain but not better apps imo,,,,but we are not here to discuss this ,,,also to those who wonder if jailbroken iphone users were afffected the answer is yes,,last week or two weeks ago at&t sent push notifications to all jailbroken iphone users who were illegally tethering to stop or be auto rolled into a contract for it or otherwise face punishment or whatever ,,,so i know its a different carrier but if AT&t can do it then vzw can do it and this also proves that yes they can track it on their networks

Okay, great, so you know what choices you have with Apple. I owned the 3G and 3GS. Apps aren't irrelevant to this discussion - Android allows the apps to actually have pretty free reign in the OS in terms of controls.

What you said was that the lack of custom ROMs or themes meant we were essentially on the same tier with Apple. All I'm saying is that there is a LOT more to the Android system in terms of its openness than just stuff you can accomplish with root. Launchers can change the entire system's look and feel and apps can dig deeply into the inner workings of the OS to change how it responds or acts, so there is some inherent flexibility that doesn't exist across the other smartphone manufacturers, even if, say, the worst happens and all manufacturers lock down phones to the point where we can't touch the bootloaders or root them.

Also, since this is supported natively, you get a far bigger development community than you do with some of the apps for jailbroken iPhones. The potential sales market is a lot larger, so developers are more inclined to put some effort and polish into their apps.

Just sayin' that I don't think all is lost even in the absolute worst case scenario where a complete and utter crackdown is done to the phones. Which, in any event, I don't think is even close to happening.

Rumor going around is you even if you turned wifi tether on there going to shut us down.I/E kicked to the curb. I already picked my spot out.

I can't see this happening. Maybe the ones who have been really bad. I am on a family plan with 5 lines and pay over $200 a month with Verizon and because of when we added the phone our 5 lines are spread out over the two years, about every 4 to 5 months. So we are basically not going anywhere because I have never had a problem with their service. It would be dumb to kick us off the network because of tethering a couple times.

Did I have (I have removed it) Wireless Tether on my phone, yes. Did I use it a couple time yes. I was in a jam at home and our DSL was down so I used it with my computer one time. The other time I was traveling and had to get to an email on my computer so I turned it on. Was it wrong, yes. I looked through my data usage today and I have averaged 2.4GB a month since getting my X. The highest I have ever been was 4.048GB in September the month after I got it when I was using the slacker and XMRadio apps at work to stream music. I did not root my phone until October.

I would like to see Verizon offer a day pass for wireless tether so in the cases where you don't normally need it but do need it for a day you can get it. I would also not have a problem with changing from unlimited to a 5GB data plan that includes tether as part of it.

They do offer it. It is ridiculously overpriced. $15 for 100Mb. You can get a tethering plan for $20 that allows 2Gb.

I am debating on either getting the tethering plan to tether my Xoom, or just getting a data plan for the Xoom. I think the tethering plan is a better bargain right now.

Running stock right now (bricked frist X). Was rooted again with the second, but really did not notice a difference since Laucher Pro seemed to make it as smooth as butter in any case, the motoblur bloat is not noticable to me with LP. Don't care about the tether. Yes I did use it a couple of times but it was really just to see if it worked. With the screen size of the X I find it pretty user friendly anyway and my laptop gets pulled out fewer and fewer times. What I really like about root is the ability to underclock if need be but I can live with out that since the battery life is more than I need to get me through the day. Honestly you really need root with the OG droid to bring it up to par with the newer phones.

For what it is worth I think it is a huge mistake to lockdown, or discourage the developers. They bring a lot to the phone and Moto can learn from them.

PS I would never, never, never (did I say never) pay for a tether plan. At that point I would move to another carrier and get a tablet or something.

I've been mum on this the whole time. I will say that I don't mind paying $20 for the tether plan, whatever. But what happens when Verizon locks down google maps so you have to pay $10 a month for navigator, or locks down the Google music player so you have to pay $10 a month for VCast...it's a slippery slope here.

Meh, I'm just staying on leaked GB. If it's true that they already have the ones of us that are rooted, going back to stock isn't going to do anything. I've probably used wireless tether once just to see how it works so if they want to charge me $1 for that 1 minute of tether time, go ahead. GB is the only "stock" version that has really worked great so far.

When they lock down google maps I am "Loooonnng gone" as Ernie Harwell would say.

Verizon will make the same mistake most growing large corps make, they will get too big, too fast and try to control too much. It is a sad familiar story. People will start switching and they will not come back. My bro in law just went to sprint. It was just cheaper for him to have 5 smart phones with data than a couple of smart phones and 3 dummies from verizon. Average Joe don't care bout nuttin but the bottom line, and when verizon wants us to pay $30 for data, $10 for texting, and then another 20 for tether...well they are taking folks right out of the market. Haven't they heard about the recession (depression in Michigan)?

Right and there is the problem, would I be willing to pay a dollar or two for one day of unlimited data to tether with....yes. When I have needed to tether twice in 6 months paying $90 does not make sense. When I am already paying $30 a month for unlimited data (I know tethering is different). Why not go to pricing plans that include tethering? Go with $50 for unlimited, $35 for 5GB and $20 for 2GB. I would happily switch and $5 more a month to have tethering included and have my data capped at 5GB, I have never gone over that. I would be willing to bet in the long run Verizon would make more money this way.

Or wait as I was typing the last sentence it hit me, maybe this is Verizon's plan. Get everyone who would be upset about tiered data plans more worried about this so they would be happy when the tiered data plans come out.

I don't think you will ever see that happen because if Verizon did that to Google then guess what??? Google will be on their way to greener pastures and that would leave a nice little dent in Verizons pocket. Not only would they lose google but their fan base (Customers) would say Buh Bye!

I know I would be one of them. Verizons apps suck ass.. Just sayin'

As far as locking down google maps, I don't think that will happen.
When I got my omnia, verizon had something cooked into winmo that prevented any gps app from acquiring data from the gps chip. Which meant that you could only use vz navigator. Everyone was screaming mad and next thing you know, vz releases an update that unlocked the gps chip for other apps.

I'm not sure what exactly happened, or why they made the decision. I know it was a different platform earlier in the smartphone era, but I believe they won't make drastic changes that affect the average user. Just enough so that us minority tweakers and rooters can't get away with too much without putting more money into their (carriers) pockets.

I'm not too worried about this whole mess. I just hope they don't get really stupid, because I still remember how to send smoke signals and do the string phone thing. So there!

I cannot be killed by a verizon bullet! :D
