I have a new HATE for the Epic 4G

This is my 5th phone. Every replacement got worse and worse. I started with an Evo, it got glitchy by week 3 and started doing crazy things on it's own so I switched to the Epic. It started with my first one. It had a lot of minor problems, but on the day that 2.2 was supposed to be released the first time, my wifi hotspot stopped working. Sprint didn't know what it was so they sent me a replacement. I got that one and the Sprint store was like, "you don't have 2.2, we can install it for you." Mistake #1. This phone was pretty started with the random resets and froze when it got hot. It was pretty annoying where I wanted to throw the phone against the wall at times, but then the second 2.2 update came out. Then it started randomly resetting a lot more frequently and freezing was almost a guarantee when I plugged it in. I saw my teacher had the same phone, and I asked him it he had any problems, he said no, so I figured it might not be the software. So I went back to the Sprint store again, and they offered to replace the phone again. So I get phone number 4 home, install the updates, start installing the apps, and then the phone just kept resetting. So often that it was completely useless. I couldn't do anything. I did a factory reset and it still didn't solve the problem, so I went back to the sprint store. After only an hour of having the phone, my battery was almost dead from the phone resetting so much. I told them to flash it back to 2.1, they said they couldn't do it, so they decided to give me a brand new phone. It keeps asking me to update to 2.2 but I don't want this one ruined too. I wish I still had my iPhone.

I can understand your frustration. When i first got my epic it locked up overnight and i had to have it replaced the next day. #2 had some weird bug that acted like what you described, getting buggy, got hot etc.. replaced that one. The one i have now i have had since November. This one started to act all buggy so i decided to root and upgrade to 2.2 and never have looked back. Sprint/samsung for all they say have done a poor job with this phone, very similar to what they did with the moment. But the devs are outstanding and have provided something that sprint/samsung yet to, a very operational 2.2 that for the most part trouble free. Just an option for ya. I do wish you well with your phone, i do understand.

You can block the update with Startup Auditor.

Launch Startup Auditor > Scroll down to System Updates > Check both boxes, blocks it from running and starting.

Jeez I am glad I have a EPIC that is working great. Hopefully rooting or sticking with stock OS will work for you. But they are not going to let u exchange it if they find out you are rooted if this one acts up too. So I would personally keep trying till u find one that has no serious bugs before you do root. I mean you can flash to stock but it is a very stressful thing to do, Odin is very fussy, took me 30+ tries installing the stock OS for it to stick. It would keep freezing up on me.

30 times? Wow. Never had to do it more than twice ever. But i do agree keep trying. This really is a great phone if working properly. Too bad sprint ans samsung handcuffs it sooo much.

Yes probably over 30 times! I spent almost a whole day, from roughly 10am to 3:30pm trying to install it over and over again. LOL it was a stressful day!

Try the last release of Froyo out the EB13 release worked really, really nice for me, which is what I intended to do that day. I wish I could go back to it honestly but I'm not willing to risk another day like that. This install of EC05 is going good so far, only a little lag issue on the lock screen, which I can live with.

As unpleasant as it has been I would say keep trying. Your bound to get one that works more correctly.

update: So I decided to just go ahead with the update and see what happens. So far so good. No freezing, no resetting, perhaps it were just the phones. I really hope so, if this is the case, it means Sprint isn't doing a good job refurbishing these phones, because it took me getting a brand new phone for me not to have problems.

Well I can honestly say that I'm still on my 1st Epic and its had its issues (mainly when I would attempt to root it) but all of them were fixed with a simple reflash. So I must agree to the post which said that there are good Epic's out there because I have one and surprisingly it came from Best Buy and not the Sprint Store.
