Nexus One = FAIL

ironic that some don't have $500 to spend on a Nexus One, yet they shovel gobs of money to Verizon EVERY month to have a subsidized Droid... :p

I have a droid on Verizon, but I do not shovel gobs of money to Verizon, I pay about $3 more a month to be on verizon compared to the employee plus plans(gotta love the employee discount I get for working at my company) which is definitely worth the extra $3 to have better coverage. And I also got a subsidized Droid too, so overall, I am getting a better deal being on verizon compared to the Employee plus plans on T-Mobile.

No, I don't believe the phone is defective. There is a well known problem with the N1 not being able to keep a solid 3G signal on TMO even in an area with good 3G coverage. Hardware problem, firmware problem, TMO network problem or some combination? I'm sure the issue will get worked out soon enough, but I just don't feel like fighting with it for $529.

I had to choose between dealing with that or the deadline of January 13th to return the Droid. I'd already returned an Eris for the Droid and I'm just sick of returning things and waiting for the next best thing.

well - perhaps i'm lucky, but my Nexus locks onto a 3G signal - gets full bars - and doesn't alternate back and forth to Edge like many seem to be experiencing...

but i can understand your frustration... HTC really needs to think about having local service centers...

Yup, you're getting it.

If you're a "tech guy", you'd have one, yes. 500 bucks is not that much money, and I'm not rich, either. However, I have no trouble allocating funds for my hobby, which is technical gadgets.

I would have more respect for your opinions if you actually had test driven a Nexus. Simple as that.

Your comment may be right if you by "tech guy (girl)" you meant "elitist gadget geek" (the fact you call it a "hobby" further concludes this). The EGG's like to get the latest to hold over their friends which I'm sure you are enjoying (at least until they mock you from that crack in the screen caused by your hiphugging jeans you like to wear). But an actual "tech guy" (say like me who builds computers from scratch, works in tech support, etc) will not get something because people are fawning over it like a german in a late 1930's beerhall. They will look at the specs, they will see if it is superior enough over the next rival to warrant a purchase, they will see if its made well, they will see if it can handle the stress, they will see if it can actually do what they need it to do. On some of these points the N1 shines, on others it does not. I somehow don't see too many "tech girls (guys)" seeing the n1 which can break simply from being in a pocket which will require at least 2 phones calls to fix as a must buy/great investment. Yeah its cool, yeah it might be nice to have. But its hardly a must have. Your statement would be akin to saying you MUST buy the latest graphics card for your PC.....because it will not be the greatest in a few months and may not be that better.

The nexus one is in no way a disappointment, in relation to other android phones. The platform has the same fallbacks on every phone, but it is obviously hardware wise the most superior android phone yet, and there is nothing to really deem it "disappointing."

You mean outside of the seemingly very sensitive screens and a possible radio problem right (though I'd take a flyer possibly on it if it were just the screen issue)?
Outside of those 2 things the problem is the N1 is representative of more then just itself. it represents a BS buying experience (it would still be BS if it were the same structure of every national carrier) and even worse support. Right now you cannot seperate the phone from the other issues.

Air Force One: "Uh, Mr. President....<shhh>....This is your pilot speaking....<shhhhhh>....we just hit some turbulance....<shhhh>"

I am a tech guy. I designed and run a network of just over 200 machines. Nearly 50% are Linux machines, the rest are Mac and Windows machines. Is that "tech guy" enough?

I love pretty much everything Google.

I like HTC products.

I own a Moto Droid.

I own a Nexus One.

I paid $529 for the N1.

I just taped the FedEx shipping label on the N1 box to return it.

I ran headfirst into the N1 / TMO 3G problem

I am willing to accept paying $529 and having a defective phone out of the box.

I would have kept the N1 and returned the Droid had it worked for me.

I am not willing to pay $529, have connectivity problems and watch Google, HTC and TMO all point fingers at each other and with none providing decent support. Google just moved way too fast with the N1 without having decent support infrastructure in place.

I will keep the Droid and then look at giving it to my wife when the N1 or something better comes out on Verizon. But then again, the Droid does have a nicer screen than the N1, so maybe I'll just keep it. For me, right now, the Droid is a better device than the N1.

BTW, $500 is a lot of money for me. I guess I'm not a real "tech guy," eh?

to each their own... i don't have the radio issue on my Nexus, and the screen thing is so minor...

you want a BS buying experience? the BB 9700 i had for a couple days... actually the first one crashed upon turning on for the very first time... #2 seemed fine, but turned into a crashing nightware... white screen o' death... slow... talk about a bad experience... will never go with a BB ever again...

The Nexus in comparison is 1000 times better... less issues than even my first iphone 2G back in '07....
