Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

That's the spirit! :D

I actually have a spare SD card (unused) at my office from another EVO (someone replaced their phone and kept their old card) so rather than reformat mine maybe I can just pop that one in tomorrow, factory reset my phone and give it another go?
Yup, put that card in. Format card. Factory Restore phone. Try again.

(Also, make sure you're contacts are synced with google, it's a real pain typing in contacts...)
(maybe SMS backup works without root, not sure... try that if you can for sure).

I would definitely add a new sticky on flashing a rom and such.. But not to this one.. Too much clutter in here already
Maybe add the "Hide" options like in the rooting for dummies guide?

These two treads are very similar, just this one is now more relevant. I don't know the forum magics, but I'd imagine a merge wouldn't serve well here.

But I agree with beasinbolts that the OP looks a bit cluttered.

(Or if you could make the word "thoroughly" blink or something :p that'd help a bit I'm sure)

Thanks, will do. Just to clarify, steps are (after backing up):

Put in new SD Card, reformat it (do I just choose Erase SD card or do I need to do anything else?)

Then Factory Reset (just settings>SD&phone storage>Factory data reset?)

Sorry for the noob questions...

Yup, sounds good to me. That looks right.

when it goes to fastboot it ask "do you want to start update" if I dont it just goes to ra and then I flash the rom restart and it asks the same thing again. The phone itself wontstart up.

Wait. Are you talking about the first boot menu? Do you have the pc36img file on the root of your sd card. If *no* then you should get some error messages saying that no image was found.

ok so i tweeked the op a little. renamed some sections and added a few more to the before rooting section. i also added a nandroid section. and corrected some grammar and such. check out the new changes.

Great job on this and all the other threads here in the entire Evo section. I know there are others that help out too, but you have been going nonstop since Revolutionary was released. I am still learning just by reading your responses to questions. Keep up the good work!:D

This procedure worked beautifully for me the first time. Thanks for the guide. Now I've been satisfied with a Mik FIX :). I did notice something after the procedure though....I couldn't find a way, in Recovery, to connect up to USB in order to transfer things over while in recovery. Anybody else notice that????? Or did I just miss it?

I need some help, I am almost done...I hope. Have sucessfully rooted, but when flashing "sprint lovers ROM" I get FAIL during parsing on [4] SYSTEM, and [5] USERDATA. Update fail.

Hmm.. That sounds very un friendly.. Much different then any error I got when flashing a rom pre 2.3.3

The word you used parsing.. Is an hboot term..flashing a rom is done in recovery..

Yes, this is the way that it used to be, but now however there is no USB option after going into "mounts". The only options now are:

-Return
-Mount /system
-Mount /cache
-Mount /data
-Mount /sd-ext
-Mount /sdcard

Mounting the last "/sdcard", doesn't do anything within recovery, as far as the usb connection to the computer anyway. Without the usb options, it only adds a step or two anyway, so it's not really a BIG DEAL to me, I was just wondering if I missed something. :) Thanks for the reply, oh and thanks again for the guide, it helped me out tremendously.
