Hi new on here and could use some help, just got gt450 from a mate and put a new sim card in and tried to top up but it wont let me make out going calls or receve calls from other people. went in to setting and tried to mess about with it to get it working, then it says 'network or sim card error'. tried a few sim cards but no luck any help will be much appreciated, cheers lg gt540

contact LG...

Unfortunately LG service is non-existent for phones not purchased through a service provider.

I have the same problem as Atlantis reported. In my case while transferring my (USA) ATT GoPhone (prepaid/pay-as-you-go) SIM card to an LG GT540 smartphone I get that message and when I attempt to dial out I get another message saying "Emergency calls only". That would seem to indicate the SIM card somehow got locked, but if I put it back in the old phone it works perfectly, therefore my problem seems to be in the settings of the new phone.

Btw, this new phone is NOT from ATT, it is an unlocked quad-band that I bought on the Internet. Any suggestions will be highly appreciated.

Dial * # 0 6 # to make sure your mate hasn't sold you a phone which has been knackered by trying to unlock it and ended up messing with the IMEI.
If it reads something like 000000000000000 it has.

Thanks for your rapid and sage advice. Following your dialing instructions what I got was a screen message saying: IMEI 352166048981719

Does that seem right to you?

Aug 10, 2001 update - My AT&T SIM Card (GoPhone, prepaid) was 6 years old thus I got it replaced today but the problem remained. However, the AT&t guy pointed out something I had not noticed before. Upon turning on the phone there is a line at the very top of the screen stating: "Phone is SIM Network locked", thus I am returning it to Amazon.com and re odering a replacement. (Having read more of the reviews it seems that a small percentage of these phones advertised as "unlocked" turn out to be locked, thus a game of hit-or-miss.)

Well, it's not a series of zeros :)
My response was really to the first post. The reason I suggested checking the IMEI was, I once entered a code which I got off the net which was supposed to unlock my (new) phone. All it succeeded in doing was to delete my IMEI number and replace it with zeros. The phone displayed exactly the same symptoms as the first post by Atlantis.
If you have to pay postage and insurance to return it to Amazon, you may actually be cheaper to buy an unlock code from Ebay. I'm in UK and the cost was

Thanks! Unfortunately a secondary problem with this phone (made for what I think is the Orange phone system in the UK) is that it precludes access to the Google app store, instead it forces the customer (victim?) to use the Orange app store but disables that access via WiFi. In other words, what a scam... forcing the customer to incur air time charges while at the app store.

My GT540 was originally on the Orange UK network but I just flashed it with the Open Europe ROM which got rid of all the Orange bloatware.

Wow, could you please provide step-by-step instructions for this process? I've just returned a third Orange phone to Amazon.com. While attempting to set up a second LG GT540 so that my wife and I could have identical phones I somehow screwed up and now the working GT540 is not recognized for connectivity with the PC. Thus, pending a revelation I've abandoned this quest.

Meanwhile, as a complete newbie wanting to learn and share I found the article below to be most revealing. It turns out that in the US even with 3G-enabled these European phone models are doomed to GSM/Edge/2G only because they are made for 3G at 1700 MHz in Europe and the US (e.g. AT&T) uses 1900 MHz. (Perhaps TMobile @ 1700 MHz in the US might work.)

As a newbie I could easily be completely wrong thus I would appreciate further comments - Thanks!
