OTA update officially released 8/24/11...(MR-5 Update) Discussion thread

Is it just me, or when you hit the power button to wake the phone back up, it takes a split second longer to come on? The capactive buttons at the bottom light up first and then the rest of the screen turns on. Anyone else have this? Or was it always like this and I just never noticed it lagging?

At first I thought you were talking about actually powering the phone up. Now I understand that you're talking about turning the screen on from standby. And yes, I do notice that there's a slight delay. Doesn't bother me at all, but you are correct on the slight lag. I can confirm the same on my phone.

It's not horrible, but it does seem odd that an update would "slow" the phone down. I didn't have any issues with the phone before the update, so in essence the update has made my phone worse.

But it doesn't really slow the phone down. Yes, there's a "delay" on waking up the phone from standby, but would you rather be worried constantly whether your phone would or wouldn't get the "mute call" issue. If that was a hardware issue, that's one thing, but it was a software issue, so that doesn't mean your phone was exempt from possibly getting it later down the line.

That said, which would you prefer, "mute call issue" or "slight delay on wakeup"? Easy answer is neither, but if those are the only choices, I'd be willing to bet that majority (if not all) would want the slight delay on wakeup.

I would chose option 1 sir.

edit:
Well I THOUGHT the battery life was better but not really imo. Seems to be about the same for me if not a little worse. I'm already down to 42% and I dont think i've used it anymore more/less than I usually do. Normally i'm at around 55% at this time.

Not sure. I'll test it some more tomorrow when i'm actually at work on a normal schedule.

Is it just me or did the proximity sensor just stop working during a phone call after applying the OTA? Before the OTA when I made a call and held the phone to my ear the display would turn off and then back on when held away from the ear. It doesn't seem to be doing that anymore. Any ideas?

Nope mine works like it should

You'd choose not being able to hear anybody on calls vs. having a slight delay on wake-up from standby? I personally like to call people and be able to hear and talk to them...LOL.

Listening/hearing is overrated. Call someone. Wait a few seconds to give them time to pick up. Tell them what you want. Hang up. Pray you didn't get the voicemail

Um, but what if they can't hear you at all? That was the whole problem with the "Mute" call. Even after the call connects, you can't hear anybody, they can't hear you...it was basically as if the phone was completely off and you weren't really calling anyone at all.

So if you called 911, and the mute call issue came up, you're basically screwed and would have to restart the phone, just to get through to someone on an emergency.

Sorry, I take the delayed standby any day over the mute call...hahaha.

No, I was told they could hear me on the other end, but I couldn't hear the phone dial or hear them on the other end.

Well...that wasn't the full extent of the mute call problem. When I experienced it, neither of my friends could hear me on the call at all and I couldn't hear them either. So knowing that is what could have happened if we didn't get the update, do you still stick with option A?

There's a pre-installed app that I never noticed before the update, but I want to make sure it isn't just my phone that has it.

It's called Smart Device Manager

Anyhow, there was an update shown through AppBrain, but it didn't identify the app in the market, when I clicked uninstall in Appbrain, it actually sent a signal to my phone and gave me the "uninstall" window.

Before I did that, I checked my apps through my settings and it didn't give me the option to uninstall, so I'm just assuming it is a pre-installed app from Motorola.

Can somebody check their applications (through the settings menu) to verify that this is a pre-installed app on the phone? Otherwise, I'm going to uninstall through appbrain.

Yes i have it as well.

It does not show up in the app drawer, but it does show up in the Menu--> Setting--> Applications--> Manage Applications --> All Tab listing

It locates your phone, seems the company does this for a few carriers..

On their website, click Products, Universal location Service,
scroll down to Unmatched Carrier coverage and click the "Try it yourself" link
Click the Accept checkbox then
Click the I accept, Locate my Phone button,
Click Continue
Click I agree and enter your email address
Click I accept

You will then get a text message telling you the address to enter into your phones web browser

You then download the software, it tests to see if it can contact the phone
But the phone is not setup to use the service at this time.

Bottom line it seems to allows you to share your phone location with developers and or find your phone via the cloud.

Two days in a row for me without the silent call issue. Before the update I would get it every morning reliably for 8 days straight. Intermitent before then since I got the phone.

Really glad this looks like it is resolved.

Yup. Another morning and still no sign of the issue popping up again. Made 3 or 4 calls this morning. No mute call issue.

I had been having the random shutdown issue (but not the silent call issue) before the recent MR-5 update, and after doing the update and also doing a factory reset, I still have the problem.

My random shutdowns (or reboots) always seem to start happening after I've been using a memory-intensive operation, like taking pictures with the camera, playing music, using an internet radio app, using Google Maps, playing Youtube videos, etc.

Is there anyone else out there still having the reboot/shutdown issue after the update?

I'm guessing a phone replacement may be my only option at this point.

I'm less than a week from my 30-day return limit, so I'll probably have to act quickly in order to have time to make sure a new phone won't have the same problem.

I had two random reboots yesterday after the update, this is the first time since I took the update that this has happened.
